Notorious sci-fi horror film Event Horizon is returning in comic book form, thanks to IDW Publishing, which is set to release a long-anticipated prequel detailing the grotesque fate of the ship’s original crew, as only glimpsed in the original movie. Though the sci-fi genre lends itself to franchises and sequels, there are many great movies that never got the follow-up installments they deserved. Many of these films had their sequels planned and were well on their way to pre-production when momentum stalled or external forces got in the way of their development. In some cases, the reason these sequels never saw the light of day was because the original movies underperformed at the box office, making the second installment a risky investment no one wanted to attach their name to.

A 27-year-old horror sci-fi movie was extensively cut short before its theatrical release, leaving it with almost none of its best scenes. To make things even worse, its deleted footage was later destroyed, leaving no trace of the director's initial vision for the film. After being filmed and compiled together into a final cut, most movies are often trimmed before their release for several reasons. While some of these reasons are practical, others are driven more by early audience reactions, budgetary constraints, and market demands.

Once Captain Miller (Fishburne) and his crew comb the corridors of the ship they find evidence of something sinister but Dr. Weir (Neill), who worked on its special engine, isn't perturbed by the disturbing logs chronicling its previous journey, inviting a repeat event.

The cult classic sci-fi horror Event Horizonis getting its own television series, and the show has the opportunity to bring back Laurence Fishburne's Captain S.J. Miller as the new villain. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, Event Horizon saw the spaceship Lewis and Clarkreceive a distress signal from the Event Horizon, a starship that disappeared seven years prior. The team on Lewis and Clark is sent to investigate, led by Miller with the Event Horizon's original designer Dr. Weir (Sam Neill) along for the ride.

Event Horizon ends with Joely Richardson's Starck having one final vision of Sam Neill's Dr. Weir, but what does it mean? Event Horizon's original screenplay featured an alien causing the hallucinations that haunt the crew, but once director Paul W.S. Anderson came onboard, he changed the premise to the ship itself being possessed by hellish forces. In addition to obvious nods to horror classics like The Shining and Alien, the "Realm of Chaos" from Warhammer also inspired Event Horizon's depiction of Hell.

The fate of Laurence Fishburne's Captain Miller might be one of the bleakest things about Event Horizon. The film has become such a cult favorite in the years since its release that fans of Event Horizon might not even realize it was a box-office flop. The film was rushed into production to fill a release slot left vacant by Titanic being delayed, but the film's dark tone and gory violence largely turned audiences off back in 1997. Over time, the film's dread-filled tone, incredible production design and performances saw it being critically reevaluated.

Horror movies have several tropes that are common, but one of the most notable is the final girl, a woman or girl who often must triumph over evil in order to survive. However, what’s much less common is the final boy, often a man or teenage boy who fills the same role, fighting back against the story’s adversaries in order to live — here are all the horror movies with a final boy. While there are plenty of final girls and boys of all ages, final girls mostly fall within the same age range of late teens to early adulthood, while final boys seem to get a bit more variety.

Event Horizon’s show can finally answer a long-term mystery from the movie and should do so to be a success. Despite its lack of commercial success in the theater, Event Horizon developed a cult following once released on video and contains its fair share of mysteries. Part of the film's horror is its use of the unknown and the terror of seeing the horrible results of an enigmatic entity without ever seeing it. Event Horizon itself used these mysteries to wrap up its story. But to fully develop Amazon Prime’s Event Horizon sequel series, it will be interesting to see which mysteries it chooses to address and which to leave unknown.

With a new Hellraiserflick on the horizon, movie buffs may find themselves looking back on other films that depict the scariest setting of all: hell itself. The mythological nightmare realm has cropped up again and again in film history, and some of the scariest depictions leave audiences shaken.
