Less than three years after its initial release, it's been announced that the disappointing multiplayer spin-off Resident Evil Re:Verse will be shutting down in 2025. A new PEGI rating for Resident Evil Re:Verse on Google Stadia has sparked hopes that Capcom may soon begin sharing more details about its release. Capcom announced Re:Verse as a multiplayer component for Resident Evil Village months ahead of the main game's May 2021 launch. While the publisher hosted multiple beta phases, the PvP mode found itself delayed beyond RE Village's release window. Few details about the online suite have surfaced in the 12 months since its indefinite postponement.

A lot of high-profile video game delays into 2022 have happened already, with more likely to follow over the coming months. Video game delays are nothing new, but 2020 and 2021 were special cases, as the pandemic hit the industry hard, with video game production forced to drastically change overnight, as teams of developers couldn't meet in person, and remote work had to become the new norm.

It seems like Resident Evil has long been struggling to create a popular multiplayer game. The most recent blow to Capcom's efforts to turn the legendary survival horror franchise toward multiplayer is the repeated delays of Resident Evil Re:Verse, a third-person shooter that was supposed to come packaged with Village, the most recent mainline title. The Resident Evil universe seems ripe for a successful multiplayer game, but it is apparently a difficult task, since none of the recent attempts have managed to capture a large and dedicated player base.

Though Resident Evil Village has sold over 4.5 million units since May, Resident Evil Re:Verse, initially planned to be available much closer to that game's release, has been delayed again into 2022, leaving some to wonder if Capcom's plan to offer it for free to Resident Evil Village owners has changed.

Previously slated for a Summer 2021 release, the Resident Evil Re:Verse multiplayer suite is now on track to go live sometime in 2022. Capcom formally announced the online offering earlier this year during the first Resident Evil Showcase broadcast. Originally, the experience was set to launch alongside Resident Evil Village; Capcom delayed Resident Evil Re:Verse's rollout in April, however, without citing a reason.
