Three first-look images from Sex Education season 4 have arrived, showing off Otis, Maeve, Ruby and the new character played by Schitt's Creek Star Dan Levy. Sex Education premiered on Netflix in 2019 and has aired for three seasons so far. It follows the exploits of Otis (Asa Butterfield), who is the son of a sex therapist (Gillian Anderson) and sets up his own sex therapy clinic at his school. Over the course of the show, a lot has changed. Relationships and friendships have formed and dissolved, many new characters have arrived, and quite a few have left, including Lily (Tanya Reynolds), Olivia (Simone Ashley), Emily (Rahkee Thakrar), and Ola (Patricia Allison), who will not be returning for the season 4.
Sex Education season 4 is going to feature a major shakeup for the series. Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric (new Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa) must now attend Cavendish Sixth Form College. In addition to the new challenges that this entirely different environment presents, he will be dealing with the fact that Maeve (Emma Mackey) is off in America at Wallace University, where she is being tutored by Levy's cult author character Thomas Molloy.
Today, THR shared first-look images from Sex Education season 4. The first is a glamour shot of Otis and Ruby posing together on the back of a couch, followed by a shot of Maeve and Thomas at Wallace University, complete with a huge American flag to remind viewers of just how far away from home she is. The final shot features Dan Levy doing his best model pose with the show's slate, celebrating ing the popular series. Check out the full-size images below:
Part of the reason that Levy is featured front and center is the fact that the Schitt's Creek co-creator and star has quite a lot of projects in development with Netflix. While the company is clearly proud of partnering with the creator, this is the first project they have collaborated on since Schitt's Creek blew up on the streaming platform that they can show his face while promoting. There is also the fact that, while Sex Education has made stars of many of its cast , including Simone Ashley, who went on to be one of the primary romantic leads in Bridgerton season 2, this is the first time since season 1 that an already established star at the level of Levy has ed the series.
Sex Education is certainly showing that it's going to make some big swings in season 4. Now that so much has changed, it seems almost inevitable that they will change even further. It will be interesting to see if they use this opportunity to phase Maeve out of the show so Mackey can pursue her movie career further after appearing in this year's Agatha Christie film Death on the Nile, or if she will be able to reunite with Otis and the rest of their friends.
