Warning: This post contains SPOILERS for She-Hulk episode 2!
Tim Roth returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Incredible Hulk much attention in the past, the movie's main villain, Abomination, is back but in a different light in She-Hulk episode 2.
The MCU surprisingly brought Abomination back in Phase 4 for a Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings cameo. While audiences saw Abomination fight Wong in an underground tournament, his appearance in She-Hulk is quite striking. The MCU not only has changed Abomination's look make him look more comic accurate compared to The Incredible Hulk, but Emil Blonsky has a brand-new attitude and outlook on life in Phase 4. He is peaceful and remorseful for his actions, believing that he was tricked by the United States government into thinking he was the good guy and Hulk was the villain.
The attitude change is one thing, but what is arguably most surprising is that Abomination is human again in She-Hulk. For the first time in over a decade, Emil Blonsky's human form is back in the MCU. Not only is Abomination back to being human, but it seems he has no desire to "Hulk out" again and become a raging monster. She-Hulk reveals he wants to start a new life with his seven pen pals and prove he is not the threat most people see him as. However, Marvel skims past the explanation for Abomination's human transformation in She-Hulk; here is a detailed breakdown of how it happened and what it means for the MCU's future.
How Abomination Returned To His Human Form After Incredible Hulk
The MCU has shown a few different ways for people with Hulk abilities to return to human form. She-Hulk episode 1 joked about the various (and often unpredictable) ways that Bruce Banner could return to his human self. Falling from high distances, getting knocked out, going to sleep, and Black Widow's lullabies are a few of the confirmed ways that Hulk could return to human form. Similar practices could work for Abomination in theory. It is important to that the original transformations are born out of anger, so really anything that could calm Abomination down would potentially help him return to human form.
Based on what She-Hulk episode 2 reveals, Emil Blonsky may have stolen a page from Edward Norton's Bruce Banner to control transformations. The Incredible Hulk focused on Bruce learning to meditate and control his heart rate. Blonsky has seemingly followed the same path to stay out of his Abomination form. However, that does not explain how Abomination reverted to Blonsky's human form the first time. It is known that he was captured by the US government, while Agents of SHIELD added to MCU canon by mentioning he was put in a cryo-cell, which could have helped turn Abomination into a human again.
Abomination Does Not Have A Hulk Alter Ego (Just Like She-Hulk)
Abomination's human transformations could also be tied to his Hulk alter ego, or lack thereof, according to She-Hulk. Bruce Banner often struggles with his transformations because he has to battle his Hulk persona for control. That changed thanks to the creation of Smart Hulk, but Jennifer Walters proved that this is not a problem for her. She was quickly able to control transforming into She-Hulk and returning to human form because she does not have an alter ego. The MCU indicates that Abomination is like She-Hulk in that regard and does not struggle with this either. The Incredible Hulk showed Emil Blonsky had full consciousness even in his Abomination form. Since She-Hulk episode 1 proved that Jennifer could instantaneously switch between her Hulk and human forms because she did not have an alter ego, the same should be true of Abomination. If She-Hulk and Abomination's powers work in that same way, then Emil Blonsky could go from Abomination to human with ease.
How Long Abomination Has Been Human In The MCU
She-Hulk episode 2 does not reveal how long Abomination has been human in the MCU. This means there is no clear answer on when he mastered controlling his transformations after The Incredible Hulk. The only tease to figure out the timeline of Abomination's transformation comes from a line by Smart Hulk. He mentioned that Blonsky reached out to him a few years ago to make amends for the Battle of Harlem. Since Avengers: Endgame, it seems that Abomination became human at least a few years ago. The MCU also previously mentioned that Abomination was a candidate to the Avengers, which would indicate that Blonsky had not yet taken on this new peaceful outlook. As a result, the most likely answer for how long Abomination has been human again could be anywhere from 2 to 10 years.
Abomination's Hulk Form Has To Return (For Thunderbolts)
Abomination's human transformation creates an intriguing storyline for She-Hulk as he attempts to get parole, but his Hulk form must return later on. Marvel has announced plans for a the Thunderbolts' team as its version of Hulk. She-Hulk episode 2 even alludes to how he could be part of this team, as Blonsky mentions he was on loan to the United States when he first went after Hulk. Whether Damage Control or someone else is calling the shots on Thunderbolts, Abomination could once again be part of a government-funded team of super-powered soldiers.
She-Hulk episode 2 might already be teasing this outcome too. The episode ends with footage of Abomination's Shang-Chi fight leaking will certainly complicate his parole trial. It is possible Damage Control will decide that instead of allowing him to be free for life, Abomination will become part of the Thunderbolts and must report to action whenever called upon. This type of setup could explain how a group of Marvel villains unite in Thunderbolts and believe that they are the good guys still, even though they could answer to someone with sinister intentions. In any case, Abomination's human transformation in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law seems to be part of a larger plan for the character to the Thunderbolts in the near future.
