Absolute Batman #1—by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles—launches one of the most entertaining and fresh series featuring the Dark Knight in years. A significant reason this Batman story stands out is that the creation of the Absolute Universe has given Snyder and Dragotta the freedom to reimagine the character like never before.

Absolute Batman #1 Jobs

One of the most notable changes is that Bruce is an engineer in this universe, having grown up in a single-parent, middle-class household, making him more relatable to fans than his billionaire counterpart has ever been.

DC Making Bruce Wayne an Engineer Makes Him Infinitely More Relatable

Goodbye, Billionaire Bruce Wayne: Batman Is Officially A Working-Class Hero

Absolute Batman #1 Bruce and his mummy

Absolute Batman #1 is packed with changes for this version of Bruce Wayne, many revealed through Alfred Pennyworth’s narration—who is a hitman in this universe rather than the beloved butler of the main DCU. In his reflections, Alfred details Bruce’s journey from a child who lost his father in a mass shooting at the zoo to becoming the mysterious Batman. Alfred focuses on Bruce’s career path, highlighting his studies in applied mechanics, criminal psychology, chemistry, military theory, and more, before he returned to Gotham to work across various city departments—including power, water, sanitation, and city hall—until ultimately becoming an engineer.

This depiction of Bruce contrasts sharply with his familiar DCU counterpart, who was born into wealth and maintained his billionaire status throughout most of mainstream continuity. Absolute Batman also differs in that he lost only his father rather than losing both parents in a Crime Alley mugging. As a result, this Bruce was raised by his mother in a brownstone in Gotham City, not by a butler in a mansion in Bristol. Although he is still exceptional, these changes make him far more relatable—especially to younger generations, who rarely find billionaires appealing.

DC’s decision to make Absolute Batman a member of the working class and remove his billionaire status is a smart move, particularly since younger generations often have a dim view of billionaires, some even seeing them as real-world supervillains. Snyder’s choice to distance Batman from this controversial association positions him as a more grounded hero, likely making both new and long-time fans more inclined to root for him. Fittingly, the Absolute Universe's Joker is now a billionaire, reinforcing the villain-billionaire association many hold today.

Snyder and Dragotta have leaned into Batman’s engineer status in deg the Dark Knight’s latest Batsuit. This costume is essentially an engineering marvel, transforming the suit into a walking arsenal and giving formerly aesthetic elements new functionality. For example, the chest logo detaches to form a massive battle axe, while the bat ears are removable combat knives. The suit also deploys giant spikes from Bruce’s back, and even the cape acts as a weapon, moving in a way that eerily suggests sentience. Altogether, these features align impressively well with Bruce’s engineering background.

Bruce’s civilian career has also given him a unique version of the main continuity’s "Batcave." Instead of the classic underground cave network, Absolute Batman uses the abandoned or unused upper floors of skyscrapers and construction sites. This ties back to his engineering career, as he knows these locations are vacant because he helped build them. It’s impressive how many aspects of this Batman’s lore connect to his civilian career, making this one of the most well-thought-out versions of the Dark Knight yet.
