five direct-to-DVD spinoffs in the iconic franchise that followed the original movie.
With a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Mena Suvari, Chris Klein, Jennifer Coolidge, and Tara Reid, American Pie is a raunchy, yet cheerful comedy about four likeable teenagers who make a pact to lose their virginity before graduating from high school. Hijinks expectedly ensue, and the consistently funny coming-of-age comedy works in large part due to the chemistry of the cast, which was largely unknown at the time. The movie is at its best and most memorable when Jim (Biggs) and his father, Noah (Eugene Levy) have awkward father-son talks about the facts of life, including the infamous scene wherein Levy’s character who catches Jim enjoying a pie after learning that third base feels like “warm apple pie.”
While Blink-182’s brief appearance in American Pie as the band watching Jim and Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth) fool around during the widely seen webcast certainly did not merit any type of awards consideration, their performance at least entitled them to proper credits at the film’s end. Instead, Travis Barker, the band’s drummer, is incorrectly credited twice — once as Travis Barkor when the band’s song, “Mutt,” is credited, and the other time as Scott Raynor, the band’s original drummer who was replaced by Barker in 1998.
Despite the misspelling and incorrect reference, Blink-182’s cameo was not the only one in the film that didn’t make the credits. The movie also featured an uncredited cameo from Casey Affleck as Tom Myers. End credits are intended to acknowledge the contributions of a film’s cast and crew and are typically overseen by the company's producer, making these moments of oversight especially unfortunate. Barker’s bandmates Mark Hoppus (bassist and vocalist) and Tom DeLonge (guitarist and vocalist) are identified correctly as of Garage Band in the credits sequence.
DeLonge and Blink-182 are no strangers to motion pictures. DeLonge directed the science-fiction film Monsters of California (2021), while Barker starred for two seasons in 2005 and 2006 in the MTV series Meet the Barkers with his then-wife and former Miss USA Shanna Moakler. Matt Skiba, who ed Blink-182 after DeLonge’s departure, added to Blink-182’s film credits in 2008, as Skiba had a little-known cameo in The Dark Knight (2008).
Blink-182 and Barker can take solace in the fact that the end-credits gaffe is far from the only blunder in the movie. Numbered among a host of mistakes in American Pie, which was shot in Southern California, is a palm tree sighting in the background of a lacrosse scene that is supposed to be taking place in fictional East Great Falls, Michigan; a place without palm trees. In another scene, Steve Stifler (Scott) is holding a beer cup that switches from clear to blue and back to clear again. Despite the movie’s well-chronicled flaws, Blink-182, like the characters portrayed in American Pie, ultimately scored by landing a cameo in what has become one of the most popular teen comedies in history. As a result, the trio will forever be a part of film lore — not just for their appearance in the film, but also because of the pair of mistakes in the end credits.
