Chapter Four of Batman: The Enemy Within Episode 1: The Enigma takes place entirely in Divinity Church. Like most of the recent chapters of the episode, this one is primarily dialogue, and while many of the choices don't make that much of a difference when it comes to the overarching story, it serves as a building block for the rest of the episode.

The chapter introduces a character from the original series, John Doe, also known as the Joker. The story continues straight after Chapter 3 ends. Players are taken to Divinity Church for the memorial service of Lucius Fox, Bruce's trusted friend. While it may seem odd at first, players of the original series will know that John can be a powerful ally. This guide will help players build that relationship in order to get the most help and information out of him as possible.

Chapter 4: Divinity Church

Bruce Wayne Joker Selfie

News channels are covering the explosion at Wayne Tower, and then the screen transitions to Lucius’s funeral. Bruce is standing at the podium, where players then have some choice words to say:

  • I’ll look out for your family.
  • I’ll miss you, old friend.
  • You held us together.

This choice doesn’t matter much, as they all speak positively about Lucius. After Bruce’s words, he converses with Alfred:

  • We can’t make it .
  • I’ll put him behind bars.
  • Riddler will suffer.

Wanting to stay positive, the first option is the best, but overall to the story, this option doesn’t really matter. As the conversation progresses, Tiffany comes into frame. Bruce consoles Tiffany

  • Anything I can do?
  • He’s in a better place.
  • I know how you feel.

Trying to console Tiffany, the first option is generally the best, but regardless of what players say, Tiffany will state how he spent too much time working. Bruce can respond:

  • I asked too much of him.
  • He should’ve made time.
  • His work was important.

This option makes Tiffany the least angry of the three, but she continues on about his work. She asks Bruce what exactly they were working on, in which the player can respond:

  • Just normal corporate stuff
  • I’ll tell you, just not here.
  • It’s need to know.

Regardless of what players answer here, Tiffany will get mad. However, the second option will make her the least angry. She can be a powerful ally if her relationship with Bruce is strong, so players should respond with that in mind. Tiffany will then ask Bruce if the disk that she discovered in Chapter 3 was the cause of his death:

  • [Lie] Of course I didn’t.
  • [Truth] I thought it was safe.

Lying is the best option here so that Tiffany won’t get angry at Bruce. After this, Bruce will overhear Tiffany and Joker speaking in the background. Bruce then walks over to interrupt them:

  • Let’s catch up over here.
  • Don’t bother her.
  • [Pull him away]

To avoid any unwanted attention, choose the first option. Joker will then pull out a get well soon card for Bruce. Players can then respond:

  • Are you messing with me?
  • Very thoughtful of you.
  • That’s not appropriate.

Again, trying to not cause a scene, the second option is the best choice. The conversation continues as Bruce responds to Joker’s talk about Arkham:

  • You broke out, didn’t you?
  • That’s where you belong.
  • You don’t mean that.

This choice doesn’t really matter, but the third option will have less dialogue. Joker then asks for a favor that Bruce apparently owes him:

  • I never made that promise.
  • I guess I do owe you.
  • You’re crazy.

Joker is going to introduce the player to another enemy faction. With this knowledge, it’s ideal to play along during this time:

  • I don’t want anything to do with them.
  • I’d be happy to.
  • I’m pretty busy.

The second option continues the trend. Joker will be ecstatic and then try to take a selfie. The player then chooses to respond:

  • [Smile for the camera]
  • Put that away
  • If you must.

Option 2 is the safest option so that there isn’t proof of Bruce and John (Joker) being friendly. Joker then starts talking about Riddler, which takes Bruce by surprise, prompting Joker to ask Bruce how he knows Riddler:

  • I want to take him down.
  • Stay away from Riddler.
  • Only from the news.

Joker will give Bruce clues on Riddler’s whereabouts, so for the time being, it’s best to gain his trust. Joker gives more information about Riddler, but then becomes reluctant:

  • You can trust me.
  • I told you I’d helped you.
  • Tell me where he is!

Option 1 is the best choice to gain the Joker’s trust. Afterward, he gives out more information about Riddler and then tells Bruce that he can help him find him. The player can respond:

  • You’ll be sorry if you don’t.
  • I’d appreciate that.
  • Don’t get involved.

This choice doesn’t matter too much, but to keep Joker’s trust, the second option is the best. After the conversation, Joker leaves the ceremony, and the player is given the option to put a tracking device on him or trust him to return with more information:

  • [Risk tracking device]
  • [Trust him to return]

The second choice is the best since players will want to work with the Joker for now. After Bruce and John say their goodbyes, Bruce tells Alfred about his encounter and tells him to inform Gordon to go to the East End. This concludes Chapter 4. Chapter 5 is a short one, and players can read the guide below.
