In 2024, Kaley Cuoco told People Magazine that she would “Absolutely reprise that role” when asked about the possibility of a sequel to The Big Bang Theory. Cuoco added that she loved the character of Penny and always will, saying her 12 years playing Penny on The Big Bang Theory were some of the best years of her life and some of the most fun she ever had. Cuoco was a sitcom stalwart even before she was cast, appearing in 8 Simple Rules… For Dating My Teenage Daughter before The Big Bang Theory.

Since The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, Cuoco has gained critical acclaim for her roles in the dark comedies The Flight Attendant and Based on a True Story, as well as her lead role in Harley Quinn. The Flight Attendant and Based on a True Story lasted two seasons each, while Cuoco also appeared in 2022’s Meet Cute and 2024’s Role Play.

Reportedly, it was star Jim Parsons’ decision to wrap up his time as Sheldon Cooper that was instrumental in the end of The Big Bang Theory. As such, it might not come as a shock to readers to discover that Jim Parsons wasn’t sure about returning to playing Sheldon when asked in 2024. Speaking to E! Entertainment Online about the possibility of a follow-up show, Parsons said “Look, never say never to anything… Life is long, God willing. But I don't think so.”

Parsons’ comments are notable since, unlike his co-stars, he had reprised the role of The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon after the show ended. Parsons narrated Young Sheldon and, although Young Sheldon’s spinoff Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage hasn’t featured an appearance from the actor, this does mean he has been in close with the character more recently than his co-stars. Parsons has also earned acclaim for roles in The Boys in the Band and Spoiler Alert since The Big Bang Theory ended.

In Jessica Radloff's 2022 book The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series, the writer discussed the ways that Parsons’s decision to move on from The Big Bang Theory resulted in mixed feelings among the rest of the cast. This was proven in 2025 when Amy’s actor Mayim Bialik told Yahoo Entertainment that she would be delighted to reprise her role for a reunion.

Star Johnny Galecki also hasn’t commented publicly on the possibility of a follow-up show.

Bialik went on to say that she believed many viewers and creatives who worked on the show would like to see more from the main characters, with “All due respect to Jim.” This comment seems to imply that Parsons could be a major holdout among the main cast when it comes to a possible reunion. However, it is important to note that star Johnny Galecki also hasn’t commented publicly on the possibility of a follow-up show.

A Sequel To The Big Bang Theory Appears Unlikely In 2025

The Cast’s Comments Aren’t Weighted Toward A Reunion

It is not clear whether The Big Bang Theory’s sequel series will ever happen, but it is clear that there is no consensus about the show’s future among its main cast. Parsons’ reticence and Galecki’s silence are counterbalanced by Bialik and Cuoco’s shared enthusiasm, making it tough to guess whether the follow-up show could realistically happen in the near future. It is worth noting that How I Met Your Mother’s reboot, How I Met Your Father, lasted only two seasons.

As such, it might be wise to wait a little longer before rebooting The Big Bang Theory, especially with a spinoff already on the way. If Stuarts Fails to Save the Universe proves a success, this could confirm that there is plentiful fan interest in the show, which might result in a follow-up. However, as of mid-2025, the cast appear to be uncertain about the odds of a sequel series for The Big Bang Theory ever happening.
