Summary

  • Boy Meets World tackled serious topics like child abuse and racism, receiving praise and critical acclaim.
  • The show's spinoff series, Girl Meets World, premiered 14 years later and ran for three seasons.
  • Each season had standout moments, but the earlier seasons had more depth and thoughtfulness.

Boy Meets World followed the everyday lives of Cory Matthews, Topanga Lawrence, and Shawn Hunter all the way from middle school well into college years, and yet certain stories featuring the iconic trio made some seasons much stronger and more worthy of future rewatches. ABC's coming-of-age sitcom ran for seven seasons from 1993 to 2000, and in that time, it tackled quite a few serious topics, including child abuse, racism, and sexual harassment, for which it received praise from audiences and critical acclaim. Boy Meets World was an unprecedented show at the time, and it has aged much better than some of the other series of those years.

Unfortunately, Boy Meets World was canceled before season 8 primarily because the young cast , namely Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel, and Rider Strong, were aging out of their roles. 14 years later, the show's spinoff series, Girl Meets World, which revolved around Riley Matthews, Cory and Topanga's daughter, premiered on Disney Channel and ran for three seasons before suffering the fate of its parent show, albeit for a slightly different reason. Still, Boy Meets World offered incredible stories and taught meaningful lessons, leaving viewers with a feeling of time well-spent, although some of the seasons were definitely deeper and more thoughtful than others.

7 Boy Meets World Season 7

Cory & Topanga Get Married

Boy Meets World season 7 was a solid final chapter, but as last seasons tend to be, it just wasn't as magical as the show's earlier stories — the characters were already grown up, and there was no mystery surrounding their future. Still, season 7 had some highlights. Cory and Topanga finally tied the knot in episode 7, "It's About Time," and spent the rest of the season planning their life together as a newly married couple. Sadly, season 7, episode 21, "Angela's Ashes" also featured Shawn and Angela's unnecessary break-up, caused by Angela leaving for Europe to be with her father. The series' swansong would have been perfect if Angela had been in the Boy Meets World's finale.

Rachel Moves In With Eric & Jack

Maitland Ward as Rachel Smiling in Boy Meets World

Season 6 saw the final addition to the Boy Meets World cast in the form of Maitland Ward as Rachel McGuire. Rachel moved in with Eric and Jack and later started seeing Jack, although their relationship never worked out. In season 6, Cory, Topanga, Shawn, and Angela begin their college journeys, and this effectively changed the series' tone to a more adult-oriented one. The penultimate chapter famously tackled the topic of sexual harassment in episode 7, "Everybody Loves Stuart," by having a college professor named Stuart make an inappropriate advance to Topanga. Another key storyline involved the death of Shawn's father and the impact that his ing had on Shawn.

In episode 4 "Fishing For Virna," Shawn's mother, Virna, came back, and Shawn briefly got a chance to live with his entire family until she left again, leading him to a cult. Meanwhile, Cory and Topanga faced a big obstacle in their relationship due to Topanga moving to Pittsburgh, but in an unexpected twist of events, she ran away from home to be with her beloved in episode 17, "A Long Walk to Pittsburgh (Part 2)." Sadly, season 4 was also the last season to feature Mr. Turner for the next 18 years.

Mr. Turner Becomes A Father Figure To Shawn

Boy Meets World season 2's main and most heartwarming subplot was undoubtedly Shawn and Mr. Turner's evolving relationship. After Shawn's father left to search for his mother, Mr. Turner formed a bond with Shawn. Episode 23, "Home," marked a new beginning for them, as Mr. Turner invited Shawn to move in with him, and Shawn reluctantly accepted. Eric and Cory's brotherly connection strengthened, and Topanga transformed from a quirky hippie girl into an intelligent young woman. Season 2 proved to be an outstanding follow-up to the show's first chapter, exploring the characters in more depth while still maintaining the series' lighthearted tone.

2 Boy Meets World Season 5

Angela & Jack Enter The Gang's Lives

Boy Meets World season 5 was amazing because Angela, Shawn's love interest, and Jack, his half-brother, first entered the gang's lives, and their appearance and subsequent storylines switched the group's dynamic. Shawn and Angela began dating and exploring where their relationship could take them, while Cory and Topanga's romance crashed and burned when Cory cheated on Topanga with Lauren in episode 14, "Heartbreak Cory." The rift between the fan-favorite couple was devastating, but it did provide for a new light their relationship could be viewed in. Season 5 was full of opposite extremes and new obstacles, which made it all the more appealing.

Season 1 was where it all started for Cory, Shawn, and Topanga, and it contained all of their early defining moments. In Boy Meets World season 1, episode 4, "Cory's Alternative Friends," Cory and Topanga shared their first-ever kiss, and it was absolutely adorable. In season 1, Mr. Feeny established himself as an authority figure in the group's eyes for the first time. It was also the only season to feature the hilarious Stuart Minkus as a main character — unfortunately, Lee Norris wouldn't return until the show's season 5 (for a cameo appearance only). Season 1 truly had everything the series needed to become a true success in the years to follow.
