  • Captain America is unquestionably Evans' definitive superhero role, solidifying his status as a Marvel icon in the MCU.

Chris Evans has had a long history with Marvel properties, but the Deadpool & Wolverine cast provided closure.

Evans last appeared in Avengers: Endgame where Steve got his happy ending, so the actor's cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine came as a surprise. What was an even bigger surprise, to both audiences and Deadpool himself, was that Evans' cameo was actually as Johnny Storm. Deadpool & Wolverine was the MCU’s first official inclusion of the Fox Marvel properties, which meant that characters under titles like the X-Men and Fantastic Four were fair game. However, many didn’t expect that Evans’ Human Torch would be included. Evans’ cameo not only solidified his status as a Marvel icon, but it solidified his ultimate superhero role.

Deadpool & Wolverine Killed Chris Evans' Other Marvel Superhero

Chris Evans' arm on fire as Johnny Storm in 2005's Fantastic Four

Deadpool and Wolverine first come across Chris Evans’ character in the Void under the impression that it’s Captain America, but it turns out to be the Human Torch instead. Johnny is captured with Wade and Logan after fighting Cassandra Nova’s men, and he meets an unfortunate demise once faced with the villain. Cassandra gruesomely but swiftly kills Johnny after Deadpool exposes his bad behavior. Though it seemed like Wade wrongfully threw Johnny under the bus, the Deadpool & Wolverine post-credits scene revealed that Evans’ Johnny did in fact have some explicit words for the villain on the way to her base.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s inclusion of Fox characters meant that they were being brought into the MCU, even if it wasn’t in the main timeline. Evans’ dual Marvel roles would’ve gotten confusing, especially with Joseph Quinn set to portray Johnny in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Evans’ Human Torch death was definitely a shocking yet comedic moment, but it was also Marvel Studios’ official farewell to Evans’ legacy as a Fantastic Four member. Steve Rogers is now his sole MCU role, and Captain America is undoubtedly Evans’ definitive superhero performance.

Why Captain America Is Chris Evans' Better Marvel Superhero Role

Evans’ numerous appearances as Steve Rogers over the years have proved that Captain America is his best Marvel superhero role. The actor had great performances as Johnny Storm, but it’s hard to compare a character that he only legitimately played twice to a character that he portrayed for nearly a decade. Evans managed to convey Johnny’s brash and bold attitude well, but he shines as the good-natured yet strong-willed Steve Rogers. He has become synonymous with Captain America and has established a legacy for the character that the Human Torch cannot touch.

Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm may not have gotten the ending that some fans wanted, but his Deadpool & Wolverine death felt like a fitting send-off to the actor’s portrayal. Evans’ legacy as Steve Rogers was just too important to the MCU and the superhero genre as a whole for any other Marvel role to come close. Now that Captain America is officially Evans’ definitive superhero role, fans can now look forward to what the rebooted Fantastic Four and Johnny Storm has in store for the MCU.
