Dark Matter book changes did alter certain aspects of the narrative, the larger structure remained almost identical. So, it's great to discover that author-turned-showrunner Blake Crouch won't be abandoning his own original version of the multiversal tale.

Those familiar with the novel were likely expecting Dark Matter cast, the shock reveal of a season 2 tease will have been an incredibly exciting prospect. With production set to begin on a new batch of episodes, Crouch's live-action adaptation of his own source material will bring Edgerton back as the story's protagonist. However, Edgerton himself has teased that his character's lucky escape at the end of season 1 may not last.

Edgerton's Comments Quietly Reveal Dark Matter Season 2 Will Still Have More Than 1 Version Of Jason Dessen

Jason's multiversal "copies" aren't going anywhere in Dark Matter season 2

Edgerton recently gave ScreenRant a Dark Matter season 2 filming update, and one part of his statement was especially compelling. When discussing how much he was looking forward to shooting more episodes, Edgerton jokingly said, "I just feel sorry for everyone having to watch multiple mes." Of course, the countless versions of Jason Dessen revealed near the end of Dark Matter season 1 was one of the inaugural run's biggest twists, but it was always possible that that particular storyline had run its course. Thankfully, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Dark Matter Season 2 Is Setting Up A Major Change From The Original Book, And It Won't Be The Only One

Dark Matter season 1 made several changes to Blake Crouch's 2016 sci-fi novel, but one alteration in particular has set up an interesting meeting.

Edgerton wasn't the only actor asked to play more than one version of the same character in Dark Matter season 1, but he was certainly the only figure to replicate his performance so many times. By the end of the run, Chicago was overrun with various iterations of the story's hero as they all tried to reclaim their wife and son from Jason2 - who was also played by Edgerton. It resulted in a storyline with no clear solution and raised the question of whether Dark Matter's "main" Jason deserved to be the victor - which made things all the more fascinating.

There's Still No Guarantee Dark Matter Season 1's "Main" Jason Will Be In Season 2

Edgerton's primary Dark Matter season 1 character could easily not return

Edgerton's playful comments about returning to Dark Matter season 2's cast don't confirm whether he'll be reprising the role he played the most in season 1. The story's primary version of Jason Dessen was last seen enjoying the closest thing to a happy ending he could reasonably expect. Sure, he managed to be reunited with Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and Max (Oakes Fegley), but he had to abandon his native reality and flee into the multiverse to start a new life, away from the Jason-ridden Chicago. So, seeing him settled down in a new world wouldn't be all that entertaining.

What is perhaps more likely is that Edgerton's new main character in Dark Matter season 2 is Jason2.

Although it is possible that the Dessen family could experience a new threat, leaving them out of the continuation would honor their ending in the source material. Therefore, what is perhaps more likely is that Edgerton's new main character in Dark Matter season 2 is Jason2 - the villain who redeemed himself at the end of season 1. Jason2's redemption is completely original to the show, as he's killed in the novel and therefore doesn't even make it to the end. So, it would be fascinating to see what is next for Jason2 - and, presumably, his many doppelgängers.

Why Revisiting Dark Matter's Multi-Jason Storyline Makes Sense For Season 2

Detective Mason can finally have a significant impact after being introduced as an original character

The Dessens' story may have been tied up relatively neatly in the Dark Matter season 1 finale, but there were a great many alternate versions of Jason still in existence - especially in the show's primary reality. Those other iterations of Jason aren't just going to disappear overnight, as many of them won't even have any ampoules of Lavender Fairy remaining to escape into the multiverse via the Box. As a result, Dark Matter season 2 needs to address what happened to all those Jasons once season 1 ended. Interestingly, season 1 already started to build toward this.

Apple TV+’s Dark Matter uses real scientific concepts to craft its interdimensional travel, but how does Jason’s “Box” work in the show?

1

Dark Matter's first run introduced a few original characters, one of whom was Detective Jamie Mason (Kate Eastman). While Detective Mason started to investigate Jason2's suspicious activity, she ultimately didn't contribute much to the story. When Dark Matter season 2 returns, she could be a very important figure. The leftover Jasons will need to disperse quite drastically to avoid detection, but with Jason2 already in Mason's sights, it's hard to believe how they'll all manage to avoid her. Plus, Dark Matter's multiverse is infinite, so it makes perfect sense that even more Jasons could appear.
