Like most RPGs in recent years, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has more to offer players than its main story; among many hidden bosses is the Betrayal of Felassen, a high-level boss offering unique rewards. The Betrayal is a part of the "Heart of Corruption" questline that's found early on in Veilguard but will take you most of the game to complete. The specific sub-quest that the Betrayal is part of is entitled "Gate of Deep Sorrows," and you'll find it in the Converged City in the Crossroads.

There are two bosses in the "Gate of Deep Sorrows" questline, and the Betrayal of Felassen is the second. Worry not; the first boss you'll encounter before reaching the Betrayal is only level 25, which means you should be prepared to take it on by the time you recruit Taash. However, before taking on the Betrayal, you'll need to pick up "Heart of Corruption" in the Crossroads.

How To Find The Betrayal of Felassan Boss

Find The Gate of Deep Sorrows And Defeat Desmal, Bloodbound To Elgar'nan

Rook fighting Desmal, Bloodbound to Elgar'nan in Dragon Age the Veilguard

First, head to Treviso, using the Crow hideout fast-travel point. From there, take the zipline across the rooftops, then look for the opening in the building you land on. It should be to the right of the zipline landing spot, and you should be able to see Venatori enemies through the gap to your right.

This is where you'll face Desmal, but you should take out the Venatori first, as they'll only make the fight harder. Once you remove the Venatori, pop the large, cyst-like Blight in the back of the arena to spawn Desmal, Bloodbound to Elgar'nan. Desmal is a Blighted orc and a formidable foe if you're not ready for him. If you're a warrior, check out this Reaper build for DA: Veilguard, which is perfect for extra damage and sustainability.

As mentioned above, Desmal is level 25 and weak to Fire damage, so make sure you have Taash and or Devrin with you before you start. Watch out for Desmal's huge slam attacks; he wants to get as close to you as possible to do damage, so either stay out of his range and be ready to dodge or make yourself tanky enough that melee combat is an option. Additionally, he'll summon smaller Blights that will create Darkspawn enemies if you don't destroy them in time.

Don't forget to take advantage of the detonations that you and your allies' skills can create. They do extra damage and can even catch additional enemies in the AoE burst.

Defeat Desmal to obtain a Champion Essense as well as some other rewards. After you've collected the Champion Essence, take it to the place marked on your map in the Converged City. Before you can open the Blight gate, you'll need to use a wisp to open a nearby portcullis and kill General Rathera, which should be easy. After that, pop open the blight gate to face the Betrayal of Felassan.

How To Defeat The Betrayal of Felassan

This Spear And Shield Wants To Be In Your Face

Once you enter the arena behind the Blight gate, you'll be faced with The Betrayal of Felassan, which you might recognize if you've completed any of Solas' memories required for Veilguard's secret ending. This boss is pretty slow, and at only level 32, you're likely to defeat it without much trouble. The Betrayal of Felassan is weak to Necrotic and resistant to Cold, making Emmrich and Lucanis excellent companions here.

Similar to Desmal, Betrayal is a melee-focused boss. It's got a few nasty attacks; here are some specific ones to keep an eye out for:

Attack

Tip

Shield Bash

The Betrayal's shield bash is pretty harmless but annoying in that it will knock you down if you don't avoid it.

Slam Attack

A large circle will glow red around the Betrayal as it winds up and slams its spear into the ground, dealing damage and knocking you over.

Frost Pulses

At low HP, the Betrayal will crouch down, putting up its shield and sending out large projectiles of Cold damage. They move slowly but hit hard, so avoid getting stuck in a corner.

Spear Swipe

The Betrayal will swing at you with its spear in a large arc. This is another slow attack that is relatively easy to dodge through.

The Betrayal will summon various undead throughout the fight, which will be annoying if you don't defeat them. Multitask a bit to take down the undead while still damaging the boss, or task your companions to focus on the boss while you squash the annoying additional enemies. At one point, the Betrayal will attempt to draw power from the tear in the Fade, healing itself. Break its barrier before it can do so to prevent it from healing.

Like some of the smaller undead enemies in Veilguard, the Betrayal has a shield, which helps it avoid taking damage from the front. Because its shield is so massive, the best way to get around it is to keep yourself behind it as much as possible. This can get annoying, but it will also help you avoid the brunt of the Betrayal's attacks.

Though the Betrayal of Felassan is resistant to Cold damage, the crowd control that comes with Neve's Control magic can be really helpful. If you are crowded by the Betrayal's melee attacks, consider some extra CC to help make space.

You'll get a few rewards after you defeat the Betrayal of Felassan. You'll receive five Etheric Remnant, 100 Mourn Watch Strength, 1 Revenant Essence, and access to a Unique Chest. This chest drops "The Burden," a Unique Amulet that gives you +20% extra damage at low health, and your "low health" status triggers earlier. However, this amulet has a drawback: your health cannot go above 70%. If you're looking for a glass cannon build, this amulet is for you.

If you're following all the steps for the "Heart of Corruption" quest, there are more bosses left for you to fight, all of whom have similar "Gate of XYZ" titles. If not, you're done with the "Gate of Deep Sorrows" questline and can move on to whichever side, companion, or main story quest piques your fancy. There's plenty to do in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, so go forth and explore everything the game has to offer.
