A key part of the plan for Godzilla vs. Kong 2 was revealed back in 2021. For now, Legendary Pictures has said nothing regarding the story for the fifth MonsterVerse movie. In fact, a protagonist hasn’t even been confirmed yet.
As things stand, a great deal of uncertainty surrounds the untitled Godzilla vs. Kong sequel. Outside of the reveal that Dan Stevens will star and Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard will helm the project, Legendary has said very little about what the movie has in store for audiences. A plot synopsis released by the Australian government suggests it’ll involve Kong protecting the hidden Hollow Earth world and a prominent rumor claims Kong will have a son. So until Legendary confirms otherwise, it sounds like the new movie is essentially Kong 2, as opposed to a proper Godzilla vs. Kong 2.
Some big clues about what the movie has to offer were disclosed long before Godzilla vs. Kong 2 was officially announced. In 2021, Wingard made some comments about where he planned to take the MonsterVerse if he gets a chance to direct another movie. Wingard said that Godzilla vs. Kong set up “some mystery” with the Hollow Earth that he wants to see resolved and “pushed to the next level”. Wingard added that there’s more to do with Kong’s home, which he called a “pre-history of Planet Earth”. And since Wingard is indeed directing Godzilla vs. Kong 2, it’s a safe bet that the new movie will dive deep into Godzilla vs. Kong’s Hollow Earth mysteries.
What Wingard’s Comments Say About Godzilla vs. Kong 2
Wingard’s comments provide a great deal of insight into what to expect from the new MonsterVerse movie. The “mystery” mentioned by Wingard most likely pertains to many of Godzilla vs. Kong’s unanswered questions, which relate to the real reason for Godzilla and Kong’s Titan War, exactly why the Kongs abandoned the Hollow Earth, and what happened to all the humans. The movie’s main focus was of course Kong’s fight with Godzilla, so its exploration of the Hollow Earth was limited to a small portion of the movie. But with Hollow Earth being his permanent home now, it makes sense that the sequel will have ample opportunity to address these mysteries in a meaningful way.
Assuming that Godzilla vs. Kong 2 lets Wingard fulfill his original vision for the MonsterVerse sequel, multiple blanks should be filled by the end of the movie. As the birthplace of the Titans, the Hollow Earth is ripe with storytelling potential and could also be reimagined as the homes of several Toho kaiju, including Anguirus and King Caesar. Either way, the movie is in a great position to significantly expand the MonsterVerse mythos with big reveals, new Titans, and some interesting history lessons about Kong’s species.
