The developers behind Helldivers 2, Arrowhead Game Studios, just dropped a new update which includes a secret change to the Automaton frontline. Alongside changes in the March 2025 patch notes, which include improved enemy AI to make smarter and faster decisions, is a whole new mission type and set of urban maps for players to take on the bot menace like never before. With this quiet addition, players can fight in the city against all three enemy types available in the battle to defend Super Earth.

This isn't the first time Helldivers 2 has made major changes without noting them in the patch notes, as the developers prefer to surprise their playerbase with an ever-evolving war that can change at the drop of a hat. This secretive style of updating the game does make Helldivers 2 an especially unique experience, as the discovery of changes by the community makes new events far more exciting than simply reading them in a blog post.

Helldivers 2 Adds Urban Maps For Bots In The March 2025 Update

Take The Bot Fight Downtown

With the addition of a new warbond and patch notes 01.002.200, fans can now play on urban maps for all three enemy types in the game, which includes Terminids, Automatons, and the Illuminate. While mowing through hordes of voteless, former citizens in the city maps was scary enough, you can now experience Terminator-like action by combating the bots in an urban landscape.

This recent patch even adds a new mission type for the Automatons in which players must take down factory striders with stratagem jammers on top of them, which means teams of Helldivers will need to come up with a new strategy for the giant walking mechs besides spamming missile strikes.

New Bot Objectives In Helldivers 2 Are Another Fun Surprise

Secret Changes Can Bring The Community Together

The developers for Helldivers 2 always like to keep a few wildcard changes up their sleeves as the ever-evolving war effort to protect Super Earth presents new challenges. This isn't the first time, and likely won't be the last, that Helldivers 2 adds a new mission or surprise without advertising it before. Just last month, Arrowhead added shovels to the game, which could only be found in specific POIs, and allowed players to create their own strategic combat holes all over the map.

Video game adaptations are plentiful but challenging in today's landscape, but one game developer has a unique casting idea for an movie.

Previous secretive additions to Helldivers 2 included missions to destroy Automaton Fabricators, which can be a fun surprise, though developers have also itted to some stealth changes to weapons and stratagems. Having a surprise in the form of a new mission is great, and while it can be a little frustrating to not know exactly what a new patch is changing, having the whole community band together and discover the new warfront is worth it.
