John Wick (2014)
The original John Wick film sees the titular ex-assassin returning to the criminal underworld to exact revenge when his adorable puppy – the last remaining connection to his late wife – is brutally murdered. The first John Wick movie set a high bar for the franchise with its beautifully simplistic, deeply personal stakes, and signature kinetic long-take action sequences. Reeves made the title character a widely adored cinematic icon right out of the gate, committing wholeheartedly to both the stunts and the emotions. John Wick left the door open for sequels but could’ve just as easily been a solid standalone story.

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
The first John Wick sequel, John Wick: Chapter 2, sees John locked in a battle of wits with a ruthless mafia kingpin named Santino D’Antonio. While there are no bad John Wick movies, John Wick: Chapter 2 is arguably the weakest in the series. It’s a little too preoccupied with worldbuilding and its adventure-of-the-week storyline feels more like filler than the other films. But it still has plenty of eye-popping action sequences, like the catacombs shootout, and a tantalizing cliffhanger that sets the stage for the threequel: John is declared excommunicado and, therefore, fair game for other assassins.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019)
Following on from John Wick: Chapter 2’s cliffhanger ending, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum sees John on the run from every hitman in the world as a bounty is placed on his head. With axe throws, dogs in bulletproof vests, and a horseback chase through the streets of New York, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is one of the most gleefully over-the-top entries in the franchise. The John Wick threequel ends with another cliffhanger, setting up the next movie: John teams up with the Bowery King to take down the High Table once and for all.
