John Wick may have been Chad Stahelski's directorial debut, but he got his start as Keanu Reeves' stunt double in Point Break. Stahelski was kind enough to honor their time working together by casting Reeves as the face of this decade's preemptive badass. Now they're back for a sequel that not only gives us more Wick but reunites Reeves with his former Matix co-star, Laurence Fishburne.
February's are typically quiet for major film releases, but next weekend will play host to three highly anticipated releases: John Wick: Chapter 2. Fortunately, the three of these cover radically divergent demographics, which should allow all three to prosper with their target audiences. That said, there are a number of filmgoers who don't mind the genre, so long as the film is a good time.
For those on-the-fence-viewers comes the pre-Super Bowl trailer for the John Wick sequel, courtesy of Lionsgate (see above). The video starts off slow and seductive, coaxing filmgoers to "slip into something a shade darker" this Valentines Day weekend. It then explodes into a cacophony of action beats, relieving the chick flick haters, and hopefully convincing their significant others that John Wick 2 will be a sexy and exciting alternative to Fifty Shades Darker.
The trailer begs viewers to "come get some" and gives them plenty of reasons to consider doing so. While the trailer doesn't cover any new ground plot-wise (see its numerous clips that have been posted online for that) it's definitely got viewers covered with plenty of Wick-style action. The beats are fierce, violent, and precise, which is just the way everybody's favorite bogeyman assassin likes it.
Chapter Two seems to have a considerably higher production value than the original, though considering how polished Stahelski made the original on a $20 million budget, that's saying a lot. The sets on display, and complexity of the fights, and number of extras suggest that the John Wick sequel will be bigger than before, though hopefully the storytelling proves to be just as tightly wound.
