What Happened In Kaiju No. 8 Episode #1
The premiere epsiode of the highly-anticipated shonen battle anime is off to a great start
Kaiju No. 8 episode #1, “The Man Who Became a Kaiju”, introduces a world where Kaiju constantly wreak havoc across Japan. After a Kaiju destroyed their hometown, Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro both swore to the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, but decades later, while Mina has risen to become one of the strongest soldiers in the Defense Force, Kafka, after failing to get accepted into the Defense Force one too many times, has resigned himself to being a Monster Sweeper, one of the people tasked with removing Kaiju corpses after the Defense Force is finished fighting.
One day, Kafka is partnered up with Reno Ichikawa, a new part-timer who’s working to the Defense Force. While Reno was initially cold towards Kafka, he quickly grew to respect him and told him to re-apply for the Defense Force before he ed the age limit. Before Kafka could properly respond, though, a Kaiju suddenly appeared and attacked Kafka and Reno, and despite their best efforts to deal with it, it took Mina and the Third Division of the Defense Force for the Kaiju to go down.
Kafka’s powerlessness against the Kaiju, coupled with Mina seemingly not recognizing him, reignited his desire to fulfill his promise, and later that day, he told Reno that he would try and the Defense Force, once more. Before either of them could properly enjoy the moment, though, a bug-like Kaiju flew into Kafka’s mouth and turned him into a humanoid Kaiju, and the episode ended with the two of them running away from their hospital to avoid drawing attention to Kafka
