The latest Marvel Disney+ TV show, Ms. Marvel has introduced something fresh and entirely new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not just for its tone and style, but also for the locations it includes.
Most of Ms. Marvel's action has taken place in Jersey City, New Jersey. While it's a mere stone's throw away from New York City–just across the Hudson–Jersey City has a feel unlike any NYC location thus far in the MCU. It's less like the Manhattan that most people think of when thinking of New York City, and more like Brooklyn or a suburban borough. There aren't skyscrapers, but there are warm old homes on tree-lined streets and minaret-topped mosques.
Ms. Marvel episode 4 shifts the action and moves it to Karachi, Pakistan. The sights and sounds of the new city steep the show even more in Kamala's Pakistani culture and her Muslim faith. Of course, that feeling is helped by a great location setting. Here's every filming location for Ms. Marvel.
Atlanta, Georgia
In a reveal that shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone familiar with Marvel Studios productions, the majority of Ms. Marvel was shot at Trilith Studios (formerly Pinewood) in Atlanta, Georgia. Atlanta has long been the home base of Marvel productions, as the studio has filmed most of them in Atlanta, where multiple Marvel productions are often simultaneously filming at the studio. Ms. Marvel is no different, with the bulk of it being filmed at Trilith, including all of Ms. Marvel's AvengerCon scenes. A few additional scenes were filmed at two other studios in Atlanta, Blackhall Studios and Areu Brothers Studios. A number of other locations in and around Atlanta were used for exterior shots and Ms. Marvel scenes and on-location interior scenes:
- 185 Mitchell Street Southwest - Circle Q
- The Fox Theatre - Jersey City Mosque (Exterior)
- Krishna Life Temple and Monastery - Jersey City Mosque (Interior)
- Islamic Institute of Atlanta - Further Jersey City Mosque scenes
- Peachtree Street - Jersey City shopping district
- 98 Cone Street Northwest Parking Garage - Circle Q (Rooftop scenes)
- 11 Howell Street Northeast - Khan family home
- LAZ Parking - Jersey City lot (Practice scenes)
- Marriott Marquis - Wedding reception venue
- The Ballroom at the Carlos Center - Wedding reception venue (Lobby and exterior)
- Rainbow - Saeed Fashions
There were also a few other lots and streets used for various scenes set in and around Jersey City.
Hudson County, New Jersey
That's not to say every shot of Jersey City in Ms. Marvel wasn't authentic, however. In order to truly capture the look and spirit of Jersey City, secondary filming also took place in and around Hudson County, NJ, which is where Jersey City is located. Since it was the second unit doing the filming, footage from New Jersey isn't used for specific scenes. Instead, it's footage used for exterior shots, establishing footage, and more. Basically, it's the footage from Hudson County that helps add flavor to the very Jersey City feel of Ms. Marvel.
Bangkok, Thailand
Ms. Marvel episode 4 and its many Easter eggs take place in Karachi, Pakistan, and it's an explosion of color and textures and humanity. Surprisingly, however, the Karachi scenes weren't actually shot in Karachi, but in Bangkok, Thailand. Similar to Moon Knight's Cairo scenes actually being shot in Budapest, Ms. Marvel's scouting crew did a great job of finding Bangkok as a replacement location. Most of the Karachi-based scenes were filmed in Bangkok's Studio Park filming facilities. The second unit was also on hand to shoot exterior and location footage in and around Bangkok that was then turned into Karachi on screen.
With the Disney+ show runtimes being far longer than the MCU's movies, it gives the crew more time to build the perfect setting and backdrop for any scene, just like Ms. Marvel's episode 4 Karachi location. Marvel's location scouts are some of the unsung heroes of the MCU. While the production designers work their magic, they wouldn't be able to without the scouting crew finding the perfect spots for filming, including the perfect spots to stand in for other locations. Ms. Marvel may be their most impressive accomplishment yet.
