The Cap who readers see in Cold Day in Hell is looking rough, growing a beard and letting his hair grow past military regulations. Wearing a tattered overcoat and fatigue pants, the only visual hint that readers get that this is Captain America is the star on his chest. Cap manages to hold up the collapsing roof long enough for Matt to save the unconscious girl he was protecting, with Steve saying that she’s “important.” Matt takes the girl and drops her off with the medics on scene, and Steve lets go of the roof, dying in the subsequent collapse.

Initially debuting in 1940, Captain America is the patriotically themed superhero who has shared the title with only a few individuals. Beginning with Steve Rogers, Captain America's birth resulted from a frail man taking part in an experimental U.S. Army super-soldier trial, which imbued him with super-human abilities. The character is often depicted wielding a nigh unbreakable and aerodynamic shield made of vibranium that they use to defend and attack their foes.
