As John B (one of the main characters) explains in the first episode of Outer Banks season 1, two groups live on the Outer Banks — the Pogues on the south side, The Cut, and the Kooks on the affluent side, Figure Eight. During the pilot, John B discusses the recent disappearance of his father and introduces his three friends — Pope, JJ, and Kiara. Together, and later along with Sarah and Cleo, the Pogues attempt to unravel the island's mysteries while avoiding any attention from authorities, Kooks, or local treasure hunters.
