Peacemaker Season 2 Casts A Batman Ally & Mystery Character

Summary

  • James Gunn teases the start of Peacemaker season 2's production with an image of Peacemakers' chrome helmet.
  • John Cena returns as Peacemaker in the series, though this season will take place in Gunn's new DC Universe not the previous DCEU continuity.
  • Peacemaker season 2 is also expected to deal with the aftermath of Gunn's Superman movie, creating an interconnected start for DC's new universe.

James Gunn shares the very first glimpse at Peacemaker season 2, as production on the return of John Cena's DC anti-hero in an all-new DC universe begins. The wrestler-turned-actor first took on the role of the extreme peace-loving hero for Gunn's DC movie debut in 2021's The Suicide Squad, where he narrowly escaped death and received a new assignment and team for his own Max series. Peacemaker season 1's tale of father issues, alien imposters, and uncomfortable "truths" about DC's biggest heroes from its lead won over viewers.

As Gunn's reimagined DC cinematic universe continues to develop its early chapters, the director shared a new update to his Instagram .

In the photo, Gunn's own reflection is seen on Cena's Peacemakers' chrome helmet within a studio environment surrounded by the crew of the series. The photo's caption announces the start to filming for Peacemaker season 2, as simply Gunn states "Day 1, S2.".

When Could Peacemaker Season 2 Release?

With Peacemaker season 1 having taken place in the aftermath of The Suicide Squad and having numerous tie-ins to the wider DCEU, season 2 is set to be a fresh reboot for the character despite many of the core cast carrying over into Gunn's new continuity. Within Gunn's currently revealed DCU slate, Peacemaker is slated to release as part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, set to follow the animated Creature Commandos series's expected release in late 2024, kicking off the new franchise. While it won't launch the DCU, Peacemaker will have ties into its first big screen entry.

The first 11 projects in the new DC Universe have been revealed, and while all of them are exciting, some rank higher than others in anticipation.

Though his obligations to Superman have meant that Gunn will be unable to direct every episode of Peacemaker season 2, the two concurrently filming projects have been confirmed to share close ties to one another. Gunn confirmed in March 2024 that Peacemaker season 2 will deal with the aftermath of events seen in Gunn and David Corenswet's Superman, much like how season 1 was built upon the events of The Suicide Squad. With this, it can also be expected that Peacemaker season 2 could be released in the latter half of 2025, creating a solid interconnected start for DC's new universe.

Through Gunn's writing and Cena's portrayal tapped into both the character's absurdity and deeper sincere side, Peacemaker established a relatively unknown character as a fan-favorite and became one of the DCEU's most celebrated projects. As such, despite the ambiguity of how much season 1 will stay relevant to its soft DCU reboot, season 2 remains one of Max's most anticipated releases. And with filming kicking off alongside Superman's production, eagle-eyed viewers may be keeping an eye on its progress to find clues about how the vigilante fits within this new world.
