The Power Rangers chronology could not be more different from Mighty Morphin, including the shows that delved into the sci-fi aspect of the saga.
Starting with Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, most of the seasons have been standalone stories. This allowed the show to experiment with new formats and genres, always guided by what the Super Sentai shows were doing. From androids and techno viruses to time travel and space exploration, Power Rangers’ sci-fi seasons are among the show’s best.

10 Power Rangers: Beast Morphers
2019
A secret organization finds a way to combine the energy that comes from the Morphin Grid with animal DNA to create a new team of Earth-based Power Rangers. This is the premise of Power Rangers: Beast Morphers, a relatively new entry in the franchise. Beast Morphers may not have been as good as some of its recent predecessors or the Dino Fury saga, yet it was still a welcome addition to the franchise. Everything about the Grid Battleforce makes for fun worldbuilding, and some of the characters and elements introduced in this season continued to play a role in the franchise. Between robots and clones, Beast Morphers is deeply rooted in sci-fi.
9 Power Rangers HyperForce
2017
Power Rangers HyperForce is a role-playing campaign set in the Power Rangers universe. It was released as a web series, with each episode being live-streamed on YouTube. HyperForce’s placement in the Power Rangers canon is still debatable, but the series takes place in the far future of the Power Rangers timeline, close to the events of Time Force. It involves time travel and features concepts from both Time Force and previous seasons, resulting in a fun campaign full of Power Rangers callbacks. For those well-invested in the Power Rangers universe, HyperForce can be very entertaining.
8 Power Rangers Operation Overdrive
2007
A synthetic life form who is not aware they are an artificial intelligence slowly realizes their true nature. This premise alone means Operation Overdrive belongs in the list of sci-fi Power Rangers seasons. A billionaire puts together a group of five people and gives them access to a technology that allows them to tap into the Morphin Grid. Their mission is to have five special jewels spread across the world before the monsters do. Operation Overdrive is a flawed Power Rangers series, and some of its characters are not well-developed. However, in of sci-fi, it’s one of the most creative Power Rangers stories.
7 Power Rangers Cosmic Fury
2023
As the first Power Rangers season to take place mostly in space since 1999, Cosmic Fury deserves to be among the show’s best sci-fi entries. While Dino Fury had already been a sci-fi-like season, with alien characters and futurist tech, this aspect of the story takes center stage in Cosmic Fury. All the villains are aliens, and the Rangers visit a couple of different planets before they return home. Cosmic Fury stands out from other Power Rangers seasons due to its shorter amount of episodes – 10 rather than 26 – meaning it does not have filler or “monsters of the week.”
6 Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue
2000
Lightspeed Rescue is not only one of the best Power Rangers seasons – it is also one of the most mature entries in the franchise. The Rangers are all adults with jobs, and being a Power Ranger is more of a mission than a “superhero dream” for them. Still, as great as Lightspeed Rescue is, it is not exactly defined by its sci-fi elements. Lightspeed Rescue takes place in the present day, and while the Rangers are given a lot of futuristic weapons and gadgets, the show does not lean too much into the sci-fi aspect of it. Instead, it focuses on the mystical aspect of the demons faced by the Rangers.

10 “Mature” Power Rangers Seasons That Adults Will Enjoy
While there isn’t such thing as a gritty Power Rangers show, some of the saga’s most mature seasons can be enjoyed by adults regardless of nostalgia.
5 Power Rangers RPM
2009
Post-apocalyptic stories are not necessarily sci-fi, but Power Rangers RPM makes good use of both of these genres. Set in 2012, RPM sees an alternate planet Earth that has been destroyed by a techno virus. The Rangers’ powers are created through science as a way for humanity to fight back, and a lot of the show’s weapons and Zords come from Doctor K. RPM does not take place in the same Power Rangers chronology as most of the other TV shows, which is great for the series. Instead of being limited by canon, RPM got to tell a great story about the Power Rangers being humanity’s last hope.
4 Power Rangers SPD
2005
Power Rangers SPD was released as a futuristic Power Rangers season set in the distant year 2025. The real world is about to catch up with SPD already, and while most of the show’s predictions will not become reality, it is still a fascinating sci-fi tale and one of the best Power Rangers seasons. SPD centers around a futuristic police force that deals with monsters and aliens, combining classic sci-fi tropes with the traditional Power Rangers stories. While SPD’s worldbuilding is very rich, what makes the show so great is how it treats its characters, all of whom are complex and well-developed.
3 Power Rangers Time Force
2001
One of the most fascinating subgenres within sci-fi is time travel, and Power Rangers Time Force nails it. While Power Rangers had done time travel quite a few times already by that point, from Mighty Morphin to Lightspeed Rescue, Time Force used that concept as its main motif. The time travel rules were now far more consistent compared to that of previous seasons, and every action had a consequence. Time Force also has some great pieces of sci-fi worldbuilding that go beyond the time travel motif, including but not limited to the inner works of the Time Force and the futurist tech from the year 3000.
2 Power Rangers In Space
1998
Following the destruction of the Command Center in Turbo, the Power Rangers set controls to outer space and flew higher than ever before in one of the best seasons of the show, if not the best. Power Rangers in Space is the first Power Rangers season to take place outside of Earth, essentially bringing the franchise into the sci-fi genre for the first time. In Space is also the first canon Power Rangers property to reveal that humans were living outside of Earth, including the Red Ranger Andros. Between alliance of planets, a dark force of evil controlling the galaxy, and the main character having telekinesis, In Space was Power Rangers’ Star Wars.
In Space proved how well the combination of Power Rangers and sci-fi could work, delivering some of the best moments in the saga. While it was still a show aimed at children, In Space was more mature than previous seasons, and a lot of it has to do with the space setting. There was no time for filler or silly moments in the Youth Center of Angel Grove, especially in the latter half of the series. The stakes were incredibly high, and the additions to the Power Rangers worldbuilding made by the show continue to impact the franchise to this day.
1 Power Rangers Lost Galaxy
1999
If Power Rangers in Space was the franchise’s equivalent of Star Wars, then Lost Galaxy was Power Rangers’ Star Trek. It is difficult not to notice the influence of Star Trek, particularly Star Trek: The Next Generation, in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy. Instead of superheroes, the Rangers were now explorers who were part of a space mission designed to find humans a new home. Most of the Lost Galaxy events take place in Terra Venture, a giant space station that leaves Earth in episode 1 and never returns. Lost Galaxy captures everything that a good sci-fi show must have, and it is also an incredible Power Rangers season on its own.
Most Power Rangers seasons are streaming on Power Rangers' official YouTube channel, whereas Dino Fury and Cosmic Fury are streaming exclusively on Netflix.
