See AllI Can't Believe How Different Thunderbolts*'s Box Office Results Already Look After Comparing Them To Every Other MCU Movie
Translation: "Wow! This is a LOT easier when I don't have to do pesky little things like adjusting for inflation! If I did that, Captain America TFA would have grossed over 490M. NOPE!"
"Also, if I use low-grossing studios like Fox and Sony for my yardstick, that makes the MCU look even better!"
"Ooh and I can't mention that just to break even, Thunderbolts needs to have about a 450M box office to cover production and marketing."
"Perfect!"
Guys, just stop. I'm not saying Thunderbolts was a bad movie. It was...meh. The box office reflected that. It'll be lucky to break even on VOD and that'll be the end of it.
An Underappreciated Sci-Fi Movie Released Just 2 Years Ago Is Destined To Become A Cult Classic
It didn't lose money because of marketing and advertising. That's just icing on the cake. It lost money because studios get back about half of the box office take. With a 100M box office, the studio got about 50M back. Compare that to the 80M budget and maybe 20M for marketing and the studio lost roughly 50M on it. In other words: Not good.
After Thunderbolts*'s Disappointing Box Office, The Next 4 MCU Movies Are All Guaranteed Heavy Hitters
LOL, no no. It's important to note that the movie has NOT been profitable. The budget was 180M with ~45M spent on marketing for a total of around 225M out-of-pocket cost. That makes the break-even point at 450M and there's no way it'll hit that. They might be able to recoup some of that through VOD and Blu-ray/DVD sales but the best hope is to eventually break even, not turn a profit.
