See AllI Think I Know Flash's Greatest Weakness & This Official Art Proves It
I think they've explored the possibility that Barry Allen was not entirely human. When I first read that Wally had to eat a lot to keep up his metabolism, I thought it was a joke. The amount of food required to run even across a state at super speed would be ridiculous. Running across the country would require constant breaks to eat. He would need to push a shopping cart full of food with him at all times.
Please just leave it at "it's comic book magic". He couldn't possibly keep up with his need for food. No amount of pockets in his costume would be enough. He gets energy from the speed force, not from food. I'm fine with a comic book answer. I don't need writers to bring real world problems into fantasy stories. It just doesn't make real world sense.
