People hated the movie for the wrong reasons. It was never made to over shadow the original two movies or replace them. Some people took offense that it was and that's why I feel the internet tore it apart. I personally enjoyed the 2016 movie, it had it's visual effects problems and some of the scenes felt like a SNL skit. Saying that, I don't want to see a sequel.
