WARNING: There are SPOILERS ahead for Resident Alien season 2.
There are some key questions that best sci-fi TV shows of 2021, and Resident Alien season 2 is repeating the first season's success. Continuing from season 1's cliffhanger ending, Resident Alien season 2 sees the alien Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle dealing with the repercussions of abandoning his original mission.
Resident Alien is a sci-fi comedy-drama (dramedy) starring Alan Tudyk as the principal protagonist alien. He arrives in Patience, a small Colorado town, and impersonates Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle. The show is based on the comic book series of the same name by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse and follows roughly the same plot. Harry is secretly on a mission to destroy all human life on Earth — but, predictably, the friendships he forges throughout season 1 (and the arrival of pizza in Patience) dissuades him from following through with the plans.
With the main storyline over, season 2, part 2 has several new plot threads that need to be resolved. Undoubtedly, the aliens who sent Harry still want to conquer Earth, and now that he's disobeyed their orders, he may also be in danger. Resident Alien season 2 reveals that Harry returned to Earth with Max, and appears to want to stay in Patience, Colorado — at least for the time being. Still, there are some lingering questions leftover from season 1, which the rest of the chapter can hopefully settle.
Why Did Harry Vanderspeigle Kill Dr. Sam Hodges?
The opening scene in the Resident Alien season 1 finale was a surprise flashback with far-reaching implications for the show: it revealed that the original Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle murdered the town doctor Sam Hodges. Sheriff Mike Thompson (Corey Reynolds) and Deputy Liv Baker (Elizabeth Bowen) have correctly ascertained the method of murder, but they arrested the wrong person. Although she may have acted suspiciously, Abigail Hodges was not responsible for her husband's death — at least not directly. What was Harry's motivation? Was he vying for Hodges' job, or was he working with Abigail?
Resident Alien season 2 hasn't answered the question so far, but it has shed some light on the original Harry and Sam's dirty dealings. A flashback reveals that Harry and Sam were involved in stealing money from a charity event in New York. While Mike and Liv search Sam's office for some clues about a motive, they come across a list of names hidden behind a picture frame. These new additions to the storyline only make the mystery more intriguing, and it's possible the motive behind Harry murdering Sam involves money.
What Happened To Dr. Ethan Stone?
The alien Harry was hilariously jealous when the handsome new doctor Ethan Stone replaced him as the (only) physician in Patience, Colorado. However, when Max told government agents Lisa Casper and Lieutenant David Logan that Stone was secretly the alien, the charming doctor was abducted and whisked away by the mysterious "Men In Black" figures. After Harry's confrontation with the agents guarding his ship, however, General McCallister at least suspected that she might not have the right person in custody.
This season 1 loose end was tied up during Resident Alien season 2, part 1. The "Men In Black" took Dr. Stone to a secret facility full of humans the government suspects to be aliens in disguise. McAllister quickly finds out that Stone is indeed not an alien. After McAllister realizes her mistake, Dr. Ethan Stone is subsequently released back into the general public. But this does leave some questions in its wake. Will Stone go searching for the suspected alien? Will he tell anyone about his experience in the facility? Hopefully, Resident Alien season 2 part 2 will answer these questions.
Will Sheriff Thompson and Deputy Baker Learn The Truth?
The Resident Alien season 1 finale showed Sheriff Thompsons and Deputy Baker finally working together to solve the mystery of the missing foot (and boot) that was discovered in the lake by Harry's cabin. Resident Alien season 2 only puts more heat on Harry, as Liv and Mike are making it a priority to tail the alien. Not only that, but in season 2, episode 8, "Alien Dinner Party," Liv's memories start to return. Will they discover who the foot belongs to? Now that Harry has (finally) destroyed the corpse of the original Harry, he's less likely to be found by the local law enforcement — although D'Arcy did see the body, and Asta knows the truth. With the foot remaining in storage as evidence, it's possible another DNA test could reveal that it belonged to the real Harry Vanderspeigle. Will they also discover the truth about Dr. Hodges' murder in the process?
Will Kate Hawthorne Find Out About D'Arcy Kissing Ben?
In Resident Alien season 2, Mike lets it slip to Kate that D'Arcy kissed Ben, but it doesn't mean this plotline is wholly tied up. D'Arcy (played by Alice Wetterlund) has been a bit of a trainwreck in Resident Alien season 1, which culminated in her misguided attempt to kiss Mayor Ben Hawthorne. D'Arcy is easily one of the most likable characters in the series. Her downward spiral following the accident on the glacier is arguably one of the most genuinely tragic elements of the show. It was unsurprising when she tried to kiss Ben — after all, the show had built up their past in previous episodes — but it was still a cringeworthy moment regardless. Kate has demonstrated jealously toward Ben's past with D'Arcy already, and now she's pregnant. So, it could mean trouble for D'Arcy, not to mention the Hawthorne marriage.
Despite their marital problems, the Resident Alien season 1 finale brought Ben and Kate together after the two ferociously fought off Lisa and David. While the close call seems to have reinvigorated their union with a newfound (and slightly nauseating) ion, it hasn't addressed the core issues with their relationship. Fundamentally, Kate doesn't respect Ben, who, in turn, far too often takes on a ive, even childish disposition. The show has also hinted at Ben's lack of satisfaction in the marriage, such as his ission that he has trouble looking at his wife during their intimate time. Could D'Arcy kissing Ben be the final straw that ends the Hawthorne marriage, especially after finding out that Kate is pregnant? If so, will season 2, part 2, of the sci-fi TV show feature a new romance between D'Arcy and Ben?
Is Resident Alien Season 2 Delivering On Its Season 1 Stories?
Dr. Harry Vanderspiegle killed Sam Hodges, but the actual reason hasn't been revealed.
While these season 1 loose ends have been tied, it brings plenty more questions to the table, like who will General McAllister send after Harry next? Will Liv and Mike find out the truth? And what on Earth is going to happen to that telepathic alien baby? People will have to tune into Resident Alien season 2 after the break to find out if these questions are answered sooner rather than later.
