A Netflix medical K-drama spinoff has become a global hit. Netflix is a prominent streaming service that has a wide library of licensed movie and television titles, though its original programming has become a major facet of its signature offerings. Some of the most popular series on the platform include the Addams Family reimagining Wednesday, the Regency-era romantic drama Bridgerton, the action-thriller The Night Agent, the 1980s-set sci-fi fantasy series Stranger Things, and the true crime drama anthology Monster.
However, while a great number of their most iconic series are in the English language, Netflix K-dramas have become increasingly popular in the past few years. Their most notable hit is the survival thriller Squid Game, for which season 1 is the most watched season of any series in any language across the entire platform, while season 2 is the third most-watched, behind Wednesday season 1. Other notable Korean series on the platform include the zombie drama All of Us Are Dead, the horror series Sweet Home, and the crime drama spinoff Money Heist: Korea – t Economic Area.
Resident Playbook Is Thriving On Netflix
The Show Is A Spinoff From A 2020 Hit
Resident Playbook has debuted on a major Netflix chart. The limited series is a spinoff from the popular 2020 South Korean medical drama Hospital Playlist and follows the trials and tribulation of first-year OBGYN resident Oh Yi-young (Go Youn-jung), who is working in the Yulje Medical Center's Jongno branch. Although Hospital Playlist season 3 never happened, the new show has arrived three and a half years after the series finale to take its place, with new episodes dropping on Saturdays and Sundays on tvN and on Netflix in select regions.
Although there is no overlap in the main casts of Hospital Playlist and Resident Playbook, both series take place in the Yulje Medical Center.
Netflix has now calculated their global top 10 chart of the most-watched non-English shows on the platform for the week of April 7 through 13. Resident Playbook has debuted at No. 10 with 1.1 million viewers amassing a total of 3.1 million viewing hours. That week, the show was in the Top 10 in Indonesia, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Globally, it is charting alongside a number of other Korean series, including Friendly Rivalry (No. 9), Weak Hero: Class 1 (No. 7), Kian's Bizarre B&B (No. 6), When Life Gives You Tangerines (No. 3), and Karma (No. 2).
What This Means For Resident Playbook
The Show Could Continue To Grow
The fact that Resident Playbook has charted after airing only its first two episodes likely means that it will continue to climb over the coming weeks. The number of viewing hours will likely continue to climb as the K-drama continues to drop pairs of episodes during its six-week limited run. As the Netflix medical show continues to climb, this could also potentially draw more attention from regions outside Asia, causing it to land in the Top 10 in other regions and climb exponentially in of global viewership.
Resident Playbook airs on Netflix in select regions on Saturdays and Sundays at 21:10 KST through May 18.
