Rumours' cast includes several global actors of renown, bringing gravitas to a largely silly film. Directed by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson, Rumours focuses on a particularly eventful G7 summit. Meeting in the German countryside, seven of the world's leaders find themselves bickering and scrambling when a mysterious fog rolls in and separates them from seemingly all other life in the area. The film only gets more bizarre from there, with the film's primary cast carrying both consistently comedic beats and surprising dramatic weight in the movie.

Cate Blanchett as Hilda Ortmann
Born May 14, 1969
Active Since: 1990
Actor: Cate Blanchett is one of Rumour's primary characters, the German Chancellor Hilda Ortmann. Born in Mebourne, Australia, Blanchett solidified her standing as one of modern film's best actors with her Academy Award-nominated performance in Elizabeth. The actor has juggled an impressively varied career over the years, including her Oscar-winning role in Blue Jasmine (which helped cement her as the most Academy Award-nominated Australian performer ever). Cate Blanchett has also appeared in a number of blockbuster movies as well, like The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Thor: Ragnarok.

Character: Hilda is arguably the closest thing to an audience POV character in Rumours. While the narrative splits focus between all seven world leaders to an extent, the polite and put-upon Hilda often tries to serve as the group's mediator. This is somewhat complicated by the egos of her compatriots, her own cultural blunders, and an attraction to Maxime that becomes more obvious as the film progresses.
Roy Dupuis as Maxime Laplace
Born April 21, 1963
Active Since: 1985
Actor: Born in New Liskeard, Ontario, Canada, Roy Dupuis appears in Rumours as Maxime. Breaking out as an actor in the theater, Dupuis eventually made the transition to film and television in the 1990s. He is perhaps best known for his role as Michael Samuelle in the action/thriller series La Femme Nikita. Fluent in both English and French, many of Dupuis' roles have been produced in the latter language, something Rumours mines to great effect.

Character: Maxime Laplace is the Prime Minister of Canada in Rumours, and likely attending his last G7 summit following a political crisis in Canada. These troubles, coupled with a history of womanizing that seems to have caused real strife between him and his wife, leave Maxime the most openly emotional and adrift member of the G7 summit. However, Maxime's impulsive nature makes him a more active leader than the rest of the group, forcing him into an unlikely leadership role.
Charles Dance as Edison Wolcott
Born October 10, 1946
Active Since: 1971
Actor: In Rumours, Charles Dance plays Edison Wolcott, the President of the United States. Getting his start with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Charles Dance has become a consistent presence in film and television for decades. Known for his stern demeanor and delivery, Dance has been nominated for several awards and earned a Screen Actors Guild Award for his performances in Gosford Park and The Crown. He is perhaps best known to modern audiences as Tywin Lanninster in Game of Thrones, serving as one of that show's most compelling antagonists.

Character: Edison Wolcott is the President of the United States, and easily the oldest member of the G7 summit. Snarky and confident (with an unfortunate habit of falling asleep at inopportune times), Wolcott spends much of the film dealing with the realities of his age and diminishing physical strength. Wolcott also forms one of the film's most unexpectedly sweet relationships, developing a surprisingly close friendship with another member of the G7.
Rumours' ing Cast, Explained
World Leaders Without A World To Lead
Rumours' is largely focused on the leaders who attend the G7 summit in , with the other four of the group serving as the film's other primary characters. Denis Ménochet (Inglorious Basterds) appears as Sylvain Broulez, the boisterous President of . Nikki Amuka-Bird (Avenue 5) plays Cardosa Dewindt, the curt Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Rolando Ravello (Diaz) plays Italian Prime Minister Antonio Lamorte, the sweet natured newest member of the G7. The cast is rounded out by Takehiro Hira (Gran Turismo), who plays Tatsuro Iwasaki, the Prime Minister of Japan.
Most of Rumours is focused on those seven characters, especially as they find themselves separated from the rest of the summit. However, there are a handful of other characters in the film. The most important of these other characters is Celestine Sproul. Played by Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), Celestine is the the Secretary-General of the European Commission and a former flame of Maxime's. There is also Jonas, played by Zlatko Burić (Triangle of Sadness), who works out of the event's main hall. Rumours keeps the focus on these characters, preventing them (and the audience) from escaping the absurdist apocalypse that plays out around them.
