The Scarlet Witch is no stranger to immense power, but even Wanda Maximoff can still be surprised by the Marvel Universe. Her new apprentice, Amaranth, just proved to be one of the most astonishing revelations yet, as the truth behind her mysterious origins has finally come to light. Amaranth isn’t just an ordinary magic —she is the perfect fusion of witchcraft and chaos.

...the Scarlet Witch's sidekick and former apprentice now has the potential to become the greatest magic in the Marvel Universe.

In Scarlet Witch #10, Scarlet Witch finally unravels a piece of the mystery behind her apprentice, Amaranth. Since the moment Agatha Harkness dropped Amaranth off in Wanda's care, there's been mystery after mystery, leaving the Scarlet Witch to assist Amaranth in navigating her anti-magic abilities.

Scarlet Witch's apprentice Amaranth's origin revealed as the deities of witchcraft and chaos fight.

After several grueling fights and close calls, the truth is finally out there. Amaranth's abilities are not rooted in witchcraft or chaos, but a marriage of both. She was created as a balance between the two forces and destined to find her own path to walk and "know herself" under her true name, Aaf Capmi Piap.

The Scarlet Witch’s Apprentice: The Perfect Balance of Chaos and Magic

Scarlet Witch #10 by Writer Steve Orlando, Artists Jacopo Camagni & Russell Dauterman, Colorist Frank William, and Letterer Ariana Maher

Scarlet Witch magically moves strands of Amaranth's DNA.

Black Cat's break-in to the Scarlet Witch's magical vault in Scarlet Witch #9 set a series of events into motion that once again put Amaranth in grave danger. Wanda finds her in the grips of an artifact called the Tri-Crown of the Chaos Godhead, which is twisting her curious abilities against her. Wanda uses an approach that combines science and magic to free her, taking a closer look at Amaranth's DNA, which she says is "based on magic, not biology." Within it, she sees a glimpse of Amaranth's adoptive father along with her origin as the "daughter of witchcraft and chaos."

In her deep-dive into Amaranth's complicated genetic make-up, Wanda witnesses the deities of witchcraft and chaos battling one another. They are caught in an endless loop until another Scarlet Witch interferes and creates the being "Aaf Capmi Piap" (translation: Among Power, Balance) to end the cycle. Although it's the technical answer to Amaranth's origin, it doesn't truly put either witch closer to understanding what she's fully capable of. The daughter of chaos and witchcraft is a lofty concept, but it is still embodied by a young, untrained girl focused more on undoing the harm she caused to her father than anything else.

Amaranth Has Already Displayed Extraordinary Abilities

Amaranth’s Unique Power Sets Her Apart in Marvel’s Magical Realm

The Eliminator knocks Scarlet Witch backward.

Since her arrival alongside Agatha Harkness, it’s been clear that Amaranth wields extraordinary power. However, she doesn’t just practice magic in the traditional sense like Wanda and Agatha—but rather, she also actively repels it. Additionally, Amaranth has an innate talent for abjuration, allowing her to both suppress magic and extinguish spells and magic that the Scarlet Witch couldn't face alone. Amaranth single-handedly took down an Eliminator, which is reminiscent of a Sentinel targeting magic s. She's also proven that she can absorb magic with essentially a spell-proof body, even if that hasn't kept her fully safe.

In her short time as Wanda's apprentice, she's been exposed to all manner of magical threats and artifacts. Although the vault was destroyed after Amaranth's failure to wield the Godhead staff, it still revealed a major piece of the magical world to her. She's been thrown into "the deep end" in an attempt to unlock and master her powers, but she still has a long way to go. Her time with the Scarlet Witch was too short to uncover everything she's capable of, but her incredible anti-magic abilities and chaos make her unique among Marvel's most magically gifted names.

The Scarlet Witch’s Apprentice Will Be One of Marvel’s Strongest Magic s

Scarlet Witch #6 by Orlando and Tammetta - Amaranth uses power of abjuration to absorb Eliminator’s magic

Amaranth's origin continues to yield more questions than answers, even knowing the "truth" of where she came from, but one thing is now abundantly clear: she is the future of magic in the Marvel comics. She has already made with two of the strongest witches in the universe, having studied under both Agatha and Wanda, and now she knows that she can't possibly learn everything she needs from either of them. As Aaf Capmi Piap, she was created to find the balance between two of the strongest supernatural forces, and that is a long and winding path to walk.

TVA #3 confirms a fan theory about Wanda's fate in the MCU. Now artists are doubling down on the claim.

Nothing is ever simple when it comes to magic, whether witchcraft or chaos and standing at the perfect center of both puts an incredible amount of power in Amaranth's hands. She's proven simultaneously untouchable and yet at the mercy of both forces in turns, and whether she can grow stronger on her own or will be led astray remains to be seen. The only guarantee for now is that fans have not heard the last of Amaranth, as the Scarlet Witch's sidekick and former apprentice now has the potential to become the greatest magic in the Marvel Universe.
