Two of Marvel’s mightiest magic s, the Doctor Strange, will always be compared, but one alternate universe has already revealed a version of Wanda Maximoff who harnesses the Sorcerer Supreme’s power. The title of Sorcerer Supreme has been ed more freely in recent years, especially when the multiverse comes into play, but one comic actually has the mash-up that MCU fans might crave most.

The Variants #5 by Gail Simone and Phil Noto is the last issue in a limited Jessica Jones series that revolves around a multiversal mystery and a version of the street-level hero who becomes a universe-hopping villain. In the series’ grand finale, Dr. Wanda Strange helps the variants bind the evil Jessica Jones and sends all the variants back home.

The Variants #5 by Simone and Noto - an alternate universe’s Sorcerer Supreme Scarlet Witch is revealed

While details on her character are scarce, this version of the Scarlet Witch is another universe’s Sorcerer Supreme, only appearing briefly at the end of the limited series when her Earth’s Jessica Jones calls for super-powerful backup.

Dr. Wanda Strange Could Potentially Be the Most Magical Hero in Marvel’s Multiverse

The Variants #5 by Gail Simone, Phil Noto, and Cory Petit

The difference in power between the Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange is hotly debated, so much so that some would even question if Wanda is a right fit to hold the Sorcerer Supreme title at all, but this version of the character officially proves those naysayers wrong. The Sorcerer Supreme-ified Scarlet Witch is just one of many variants that show up in Simone and Noto’s multiverse mystery, and Dr. Wanda Strange is actually one of the least outlandish character twists in the series. With her magical prowess, it totally makes sense for her to take up the mantle.

Dr. Wanda Strange is pretty level-headed and confidently levitates in to handle the situation after the battle between several different Jessica Jones variants concludes. Her universe’s version of Jessica is apparently dating Pietro and goes by the name Knightress, and Wanda may have had a romantic connection to a deceased Stephen Strange, given her changed last name. This would make her similar to the character Clea, who also held the Sorcerer Supreme mantle after Strange’s death. Other characters who have held the title include Magik, Wiccan, Doctor Doom during his One World Under Doom event on Earth-616, and even more.

Could Dr. Wanda Strange Return?

Tarot #3 Scarlet Witch vs Doctor Strange variant cover

While this version of Wanda's character is just a creation for the variant-filled series and hasn’t appeared since, it proves that the Scarlet Witch becoming Sorcerer Supreme works under the right circumstances. However, the Wanda in Marvel’s main continuity seems to be doing just fine on her own, proving that the Scarlet Witch doesn’t need the Sorcerer Supreme title or any abilities granted along with it to be a powerhouse. Still, as a fun blend of Marvel’s greatest magic superheroes, Dr. Wanda Strange and her alternate universe would be cool to revisit in the future.

Wanda proves she would be a formidable Sorcerer Supreme...

Even though Dr. Wanda Strange is an exciting concept for Marvel to play with, her special brand of magic will seemingly stay confined to her corner of the multiverse for now. Wanda proves she would be a formidable Sorcerer Supreme, but since she’s iconic enough on her own, it seems like a level-up that would be more novel with a less obvious choice taking on the role. While Scarlet Witch may not be replacing Doctor Strange in Marvel’s main continuity anytime soon, the multiverse has already proved that her becoming the Sorcerer Supreme is a real possibility, and it would totally work.
