Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Secrets We Keep and mentions rape.

Netflix's mystery crime series great crime dramas, Secrets We Keep masterfully sets up its characters and stakes, introducing its wealthy Copenhagen residents and their less privileged au pairs.

As the series unfolds, its main characters become more incriminated by their actions and secrets. While the police do investigate the crime, with Detective Aicha leading the charge, those higher up in the power structure are less interested in uncovering what happened to Ruby, the missing au pair. Only Ruby's friend Angel and her boss Cecilie seem to want answers, even more so when Ruby is found dead. Secrets We Keep's ending finally reveals what happened to Ruby, but its resolution is anything but happy.

8 Oscar Lurking In The Background & Filming Girls

It Is Immediately Clear That Something Is Wrong With Oscar

Episode 1 introduces all of its adult characters, Cecilie and Mike, Katarina and Rasmus, and Ruby and Angel, in addition to their children, Viggo and Oscar. Cecilie and Mike's son, Viggo, is very quiet and shy. In contrast, Katarina and Rasmus's son, Oscar, is immediately more troubling. The two boys are friends, but Oscar is the ringleader and pressures Viggo into bad behavior. In episode 1, this appears in the form of him lurking in the background and eventually filming girls from secretive locations.

Without him even saying anything, Secrets We Keep makes it clear that the character gets enjoyment out of watching people, especially women and teenage girls, without them knowing.

The actor who played Oscar, Frode Bilde Ronsholt, convincingly made Oscar suspicious and very sinister from the start. Even before the truth about him is revealed, his quiet observance of others is already disturbing. Without him even saying anything, Secrets We Keep makes it clear that the character gets enjoyment out of watching people, especially women and teenage girls, without them knowing. This sort of voyeuristic behavior set Oscar up as a suspicious character, even when the majority of Cecilie and Aicha's suspicions fell on his father, Rasmus.

7 Oscar's Drone & His Focus On Cecilie

From Episode 1, Audiences Know He Is Looking At Things He Shouldn't Be

Another hint to Oscar's assault on Ruby that is clear early on is his use of a drone to spy on people. By episodes 2 and 3, Oscar openly uses his drone in front of his mother and Cecilie, but even before then, audiences get a glimpse at what Oscar is really doing with the drone. Episode 1 largely serves to set up the mystery of Ruby's disappearance, but it ends on a shocking note as Cecilie and Mike are filmed through their window while having sex.

Though audiences don't yet know who is watching and filming them, Oscar's drone use in the next episode confirms it was him. Cecilie and Mike's sex life is meant to be intimate between them, but Oscar's intrusion on that moment by using his drone to film them is a massive violation of their privacy. He has no sense of right and wrong and no recognition that he cannot just intrude on others' lives and bodies in that way. Because he is never caught for that particular indiscretion, Oscar has no consequences for his actions.

6 Ruby Was Left Alone With Oscar While His Parents Were Out Of Town

In addition to Oscar's troubling behavior, the Netflix series also provides some exposition that hints at Ruby's fate. In episode 1, Ruby and Angel discuss their past weeks and talk about their host families. During this time, Ruby tells Angel that she did not receive vacation time when Katarina and Rasmus were out of town. Instead, she stayed at their house to take care of Oscar. This information was also confirmed by a conversation between Cecilie and Katarina.

Netflix's crime drama series Secrets We Keep has been a hit with audiences, and its cast have previously starred in other great shows.

While relaxing and drinking wine, the two wealthy women discuss Katarina and Rasmus's recent trip for work. When Cecilie asks how Oscar felt about the time away, Katarina informs her that he was not with them, surprising Cecilie. Understandably, Cecilie seems shocked that they would not have given Ruby time off and that she was expected to care for Oscar by herself the whole week. This scene highlights both the period when Oscar was left alone with Ruby and that Katarina does not see Ruby as a human being who deserves breaks.

5 Oscar Always Spoke Disrespectfully About Ruby (&Women Generally)

Oscar Had A Clear Disdain For Women He Deemed Below Him

Compared to other characters, Oscar does not talk much, but when he does, it is always something concerning. Oscar's attitude toward women and, particularly, the women he views as being below him, makes his role in Ruby's pregnancy and death clear. Oscar views women as objects. This is visible in his group chat with Viggo and some of their other classmates, in which the boys post harmful, sexually explicit content without the consent of the women being filmed.

This behavior in a child under the age of 15 is already incredibly concerning and cause for his family to seek help, but Secrets We Keep makes it clear that no one is watching Oscar. Instead, in addition to seeing women more generally as objects, Oscar's behavior towards Ruby is even worse. Because she works for his parents, he believes that Ruby is required to do everything for him and never tell him no, ultimately leading him to sexually assault her.

4 Katarina Asked Cecilie To Look For Ruby Rather Than Doing It Herself

Katarina Was Unbothered By Her Au Pair's Disappearance

Oscar raping Ruby is truly shocking, but the show makes the crime even messier by involving his mother Katarina. In the final moments of the series, Cecilie learns that her friend murdered Ruby after learning that her son raped their au pair to cover up the crime. She also shares with Cecilie that she was never worried about being caught and felt justified in her actions to protect her son. However, even this big reveal had some clues.

Aside from her slight annoyance that it will create more work for her, Katarina does not care at all that Ruby is not at home, hinting that she may know more about the disappearance than she is letting on.

One of the main clues to Katarina's involvement in Ruby's disappearance is her behavior right after it was discovered. She comes over to Cecilie's house and casually asks if anyone has seen Ruby, focusing more on how this will affect her son getting to school on time than on whether her employee is healthy. Aside from her slight annoyance that it will create more work for her, Katarina does not care at all that Ruby is not at home, hinting that she may know more about the disappearance than she is letting on.

3 Katarina Did Not Want Cecilie To Check Ruby's Room

She Was Adamant That The Group Did Not Need To Check The Basement

In addition to wanting Cecilie and Angel to do the work to look for Ruby rather than looking for her au pair herself, Katarina became even more suspicious when Cecilie and her husband, Mike, came over for dinner. Despite the rest of the group being seemingly unconcerned about Ruby's disappearance, Cecilie continues questioning Katarina and Rasmus about whether they have looked for Ruby at all or checked to see if her stuff has been taken, to prove whether she willingly left or disappeared unannounced.

Both Rasmus and Katarina state that they have not checked Ruby's room in the basement to see if she took her money, port, or clothes, so Cecilie decides to go look. Before she can go, Katarina tries to stop the group, saying they do not need to look in the basement and that they haven't been down there in a long time. Even if she truly does not care about Ruby, an innocent person would have nothing to hide from others looking around, so Katarina's attempts to convince Cecilie to leave it alone are telling.

2 The Nanny Cam & Its Connection To Oscar's Behavior

The Teddy Bear Nanny Cam Was Already Suspicious

Learning that Katarina had placed a nanny cam in Ruby's room says something about her lack of respect for the au pair. Though Katarina and Rasmus claim that they do not use it, the teddy bear's position in Ruby's room raises questions. What's more, knowing Oscar's repeated use of his drone to spy on people, the teddy bear camera hints at how far his inappropriate actions will go.

Secrets We Keep currently holds a 100% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The full extent of Oscar's use of the teddy bear nanny cam only becomes clear in the final episodes. In class, Viggo refuses to put his phone away when instructed by his teacher, purposefully allowing his phone to be taken and the contents of the group chat to be revealed. Viggo and Oscar's group chat proves that Oscar turned on the nanny cam seemingly without his parents knowing and recorded Ruby. This disturbing behavior continues the streak that Oscar started by recording his classmates and following Cecilie with his drone.

1 Katarina's Reaction To Oscar's Group Chat Video

Katarina & Cecilie Had Opposite Reactions

Katerina talking to Cecilie smugly in Secrets We Keep

Though Oscar and Katarina's involvement in Ruby's disappearance becomes clearer across each episode of Secrets We Keep, Katarina cemented herself as a big suspect during the parent-teacher meeting about the boys' group chat. Cecilie is ed by Viggo's teacher first to show her the naked video of Ruby, assuming it to be her au pair, Angel. However, when Cecilie points out that it is Ruby, who has since gone missing, the teacher expands the meeting to include all the boys' parents, including Katarina.

Understandably, all the parents are shocked and angry that their children would do something like this, but Katarina takes it too far, slapping Oscar's teacher. In another context, this sort of behavior could be written off as a parent truly in shock, but audiences have already come to know that Katarina is only concerned with what she sees as protecting her son. Her assault on Oscar's teacher and unwillingness to take responsibility for her son's behavior prove Katarina was involved in Ruby's disappearance, setting up Secrets We Keep's final reveal.
