Summary

  • Mark Wahlberg's film adaptation of The Six Million Dollar Man, titled The Six Billion Dollar Man, has finally gained hope for production.
  • Wahlberg is still actively pursuing the project and hopes to fast track it once the rights are secured.
  • The long-anticipated movie has faced multiple delays and struggles, but Wahlberg remains committed to seeing it through to the end.

After nearly a decade, Mark Wahlberg reignites excitement for The Six Million Dollar Man, a TV series that ran for five seasons from 1973 to 1978. The show, which starred Lee Majors, focused on a test pilot who, after being injured, is rebuilt with nuclear-powered bionic limbs. Wahlberg's adaptation of The Six Million Dollar Man was announced all the way back in 2014, with the actor attached to the remake fairly early on in the process. He is currently the only actor associated with the film.

Now, Wahlberg provides an update to Collider for The Six Billion Dollar Man. While Wahlberg is “still grinding every day to get it made,” he believes that “there is finally hope” for The Six Billion Dollar Man. Once the rights to the film are secured, Wahlberg hopes to “fast track that movie to get made.” Check out the full quote from Wahlberg below:

You know what, I think there is finally hope for that to happen. And I think it’s kind of actually a lot to do with this movie [current project The Family Plan], because hopefully Skydance will have the rights, if not fully buttoned up now, very soon, and we’ll fast track that movie to get made. So, I’m still not out of the fight, I’m still grinding every day to get it made. You know, its tough to get certain things made it’s very difficult, it was an uphill battle, but I think certain ones are worth just seeing through to the end.

Despite Wahlberg's version of the movie being announced almost a decade ago, little progress has been made toward the Six Billion Dollar Man is set to be directed by Travis Knight of Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings fame.

It helps that the premise of the original Six Million Dollar Man show, which the movie is likely to hew at least somewhat close to, will appeal to 21st-century audiences who are increasingly interested in AI and adjacent topics.

Wahlberg’s update confirms his continued interest in The Six Billion Dollar Man, which is no small thing considering how long he has been attached to the project. It's also worth keeping in mind that even prior to Wahlberg's involvement, there have been efforts to bring a Six Million Dollar Man adaptation to the big screen dating back to 1995. However, if the rights situation is cleared up the way Wahlberg believes it will be, there could be more concrete updates on the movie soon. Even projects that have been in development hell for years can come together quickly once key issues are sorted out.

It helps that the premise of the original Six Million Dollar Man show, which the movie is likely to hew at least somewhat close to, will appeal to 21st-century audiences who are increasingly interested in AI and adjacent topics. Despite the show coming out in the '70s, that makes it surprisingly relevant today. Hopefully, The Six Billion Dollar Man can land a studio soon and finally move forward with its long-anticipated production.
