I've never been more convinced that Andor season 2. Star Wars Celebration 2025 is just around the corner in April, so more announcements are no doubt impending, but with so little currently in the lineup, plenty of attention has been paid to what this brand-new season of Ahsoka could bring.

the Mortis Gods and Thrawn heading back to the main Star Wars galaxy (with Ezra Bridger in tow unbeknownst to Thrawn). Thrawn's intentions are clearly to bring together the Imperial remnants and do what he can to re-establish the Empire with him at the helm. There's one other focus I believe Thrawn will have, though, and I believe that will require bringing back this critical Legends planet.

Wayland Was Once The Home Of Project Necromancer

This Planet Became Key In Star Wars: The Bad Batch

Wayland in Star Wars: The Bad Batch

Wayland was introduced in Star Wars: Heir to the Empire, the first of the Thrawn trilogy of books, written by Timothy Zahn. Those books became Legends Star Wars and significantly restructured the Star Wars canon, which was a major disappointment to fans of Thrawn. Thankfully, Thrawn re-entered the Star Wars canon in Star Wars Rebels, and he has since appeared in Ahsoka and Star Wars: Tales of the Empire. With him currently positioned as the main villain for Ahsoka season 2, I'm convinced this planet is about to make a return as well.

Purchase Star Wars: Heir to the Empire

This planet has already appeared once in Star Wars, in Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Mount Tantiss, a mountain on the planet Wayland, was the location of a cloning facility heavily involved in the Bad Batch season 3 finale, Mount Tantiss was destroyed, but it makes so much sense that Ahsoka season 2 would be the time for Wayland's on-screen return.

With Thrawn's Return, Wayland Seems Not Only Vital, But Also Inevitable

This Is A Logical Next Step For The Ahsoka Show

Not only because of Thrawn's connection to the planet in Legends but also based on his presumed plan in Ahsoka season 2, Thrawn visiting Wayland is the logical next step in his Star Wars story. Mount Tantiss may have been destroyed, but Wayland undoubtedly continues to be the location of countless essential Imperial secrets. As Thrawn works to bring the Imperial remnants back together and continue what Palpatine started, this would be the perfect location for him to get started.

As Thrawn works to bring the Imperial remnants back together and continue what Palpatine started, this would be the perfect location for him to get started.

In fact, I would be thrilled to see Thrawn establish Wayland as his base, as we're not currently sure where that will be. Realistically, this planet may actually be shown on screen even before Ahsoka season 2, as Thrawn is primed to be the main Star Wars villain in the movie The Mandalorian and Grogu. Ahsoka season 2's release date hasn't yet been confirmed, although with filming rumored to begin this summer, it's likely Ahsoka season 2 will be released after The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Tantiss Would Be The Best Place For Project Necromancer To Start Over

We Could Finally Get Some Long-Awaited Answers

Emperor Palpatine's clone sitting on his throne in The Rise of Skywalker.

The return of Wayland to the Star Wars screen could also provide answers to questions that have only recently been created in the franchise. Specifically, Palpatine's sudden return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker proved very controversial, in part because it wasn't really explained in that movie beyond Poe Dameron's now infamous line, "Somehow, Palpatine returned" and some loose references to cloning. It seemed as though The Bad Batch was going to give a direct answer, given the cloning project on Tantiss.

When Tantiss blew up at the end of The Bad Batch, the path to Palpatine's resurrection became confusing once again, though. Surely, Project Necromancer gets picked back up at some point, as the objective was to successfully create Force-sensitive clones—something that was essential to bringing Palpatine back. If Thrawn does go back to Wayland in Ahsoka season 2 and/or The Mandalorian and Grogu, he can continue this work. It is especially important that Star Wars does this sooner rather than later, as Palpatine's return remains a major sore point even five years later.

Personally, I think this would be a brilliant move for Star Wars to make. Unlike several choices Star Wars has made in recent years, including the shocking return of Emperor Palpatine, Thrawn is an incredibly popular character, and furthering his story with this Legends planet would surely be a popular decision as well. It would also be brilliant to finally get to see this planet in live-action. Although there is still so much we don't know about Ahsoka season 2, I'm fully convinced Star Wars will be bringing Wayland back in the season of the show.
