This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #2

Darth Vader's most recently revealed kills in the galaxy far, far away. Following his corruption into a Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Vader unleashed his vengeance upon many targets who fell victim to his wrath in the Star Wars timeline. To that end, it was both surprising and logical to find out that Darth Vader supposedly once returned to his desert home world of Tatooine to kill Watto.

Having been the junker who owned Anakin Skywalker and his mother as slaves, initial teasers for Charles Soule and Luke Ross' Legacy of Vader #2 revealed weeks before the full issue's release seemed to confirm that Vader killed his old slave master, a reveal that came via Kylo Ren who is seeking to learn more about his grandfather's past between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Naturally, this teaser went viral with some fans holding satirical "funerals" and memorials online for Watto, though the full issue has since revealed the truth thanks to Vader's old servant Vaneé:

Vanee Reveals Darth Vader Didn't Kill Watto in Legacy of Vader #2

Apparently, Kylo Ren merely made an assumption about his grandfather's past with the full issue confirming that Vader was not the one who murdered Watto in the Star Wars timeline, though it does open the door for an exciting new arc for the First Order's new Supreme Leader.

Star Wars Made Us Think That Darth Vader Once Returned To Tatooine And Killed Watto

The Toydarian Who Owned Anakin And His Mother

One has to wonder why Star Wars would release a teaser making us think that Darth Vader got revenge on the Toydarian that once owned him as a slave alongside his mother, Shmi. Not only does it make sense for Vader's character, but it's been established that Vader visited Tatooine more than once in the Star Wars timeline. At one point, Vader even killed a second clan of Tusken Raiders during the original trilogy, still holding a grudge towards the Sand People who killed his mother.

As such, to say that Vader was too focused on other things to not seek revenge on Watto doesn't feel like a satisfying answer. While it is confirmed that Watto is dead, Darth Vader was not the one who brought Watto's demise. Now, more than one Star Wars fan will likely agree that they now feel cheated, as the supposed reveal from the teaser felt like a darkly exciting discovery about Darth Vader's history that hadn't been known about prior, only for the full issue to confirm a far less interesting truth.

The Truth About Watto's Star Wars Fate Is Much Less Exciting

Though Kylo Ren's New Arc Is A Surprise

Kylo Ren Speeding To Kill Gardulla The Hutt

As disappointing and underwhelming as Watto's true fate is, it does lead to an exciting new mission for Kylo Ren once he learns that Gardulla the Hutt owned Anakin and Shmi before they were sold to the Toydarian junk dealer. With Vaneé's confirmation that Gardulla still lives in a fortress on Tatooine, Kylo immediately takes a speeder to seek vengeance on his late grandfather's behalf. As such, he certainly mirrors Anakin in Attack of the Clones and his mission to find and save his mother from the Sand People.

Future issues of Legacy of Vader will now reveal Kylo Ren's conflict with Gardulla, which should be pretty exciting. However, it still doesn't quite make up for Star Wars pulling the rug out from under us when it comes to Watto. It's certainly baffling why Star Wars would reveal something so critical about Darth Vader's past, only to later confirm a more boring truth just a few weeks later.

The son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, Ben was manipulated by Palpatine through the Force for most of his life, influenced toward the dark side of the Force. A misstep by Luke Skywalker ultimately left Ben feeling he had no choice but to embrace the dark side, and he became Kylo Ren, a key figure in the First Order. Kylo Ren's heart remained deeply divided, however, even after he ascended to become Supreme Leader of the First Order. He was ultimately redeemed by Rey, with whom he shared a remarkable Force bond, and by the love of his parents.
