Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #2

Kylo Ren is on a mission to learn more about his grandfather's past following the events of The Last Jedi. However, this leads to a major confrontation on Tatooine he clearly wasn't prepared for.

Having encountered Darth Vader's old servant Vaneé on Mustafar, the caretaker of Vader's fortress offers to share with the new Supreme Leader how his grandfather was able to turn his past into power in the dark side, opposing Kylo Ren's belief that the past should be left to die. This leads to a visit to Tatooine in Charles Soule and Luke Ross' Legacy of Vader #2 where Kylo learns about Darth Vader's childhood as a slave along with his mother. As such, Kylo Ren subsequently sets his sights on Gardulla the Hutt, though she's surprisingly prepared for the Supreme Leader.

Kylo Ren Wanted To Kill Gardulla The Hutt Between The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker

Anakin and Shmi Skywalker's Original Owner

Kylo Ren Tries To Kill Gardulla The Hutt in Legacy of Vader #2

Wanting to "erase" this story from the past, Kylo intends to destroy Gardulla, Anakin and Shmi Skywalker's original owner before the Toydarian Watto. Although the junk dealer is confirmed to be dead at this point in the Star Wars timeline, Watto was not killed by Darth Vader as teasers initially suggested. As a result, Gardulla has become Kylo's target in this new issue, a Hutt crime lord who's long been working to ascend to greater power following the death of Jabba the Hutt a few decades prior in Return of the Jedi.

In the final original trilogy movie, Jabba was slain by Leia Organa during the Rebels' mission to rescue Han Solo. Taking place over the sarlacc pit known as the Great Pit of Carkoon, the battle also saw Luke Skywalker making his debut as a Jedi Knight, new lightsaber and all. To that end, this new issue reveals that Gardulla took steps to ensure that she'd never meet the same fate as Jabba.

Gardulla's Force-Sensitive Creature Would Have Been A Game-Changer for Jabba In Return of the Jedi

Overpowering Kylo Ren And Taking His Lightsaber

For all his confidence and power, Gardulla humiliates Kylo Ren thanks to a small unknown creature sitting next to her throne. Appearing to be made up of various gray blobs with two arms and two big black eyes, this creature uses its own power in the Force to rip Kylo's lightsaber out of his hands before throwing him against the wall. The creature is also sentient, telling Kylo that the Force was weak with him, an impressive claim suggesting that this small and curious creature is incredibly powerful.

Kylo Ren Was Never Going to Be What Palpatine Wanted, And Star Wars Can Prove It

Star Wars has a simple reason why Kylo Ren was never going to be as strong as Darth Vader, and why he could never be what Palpatine wanted.

Likewise, Gardualla confirms that this creature is in her employ after "what happened with Jabba", wanting to make sure that she could counter any Force s who might try and interfere with her criminal empire. With Kylo Ren imprisoned in chains by the issue's end, it's going to be fascinating to learn more about this creature and its origins in future issues. After all, the implication is that the events of Return of the Jedi would have unfolded very differently had Jabba had one of these creatures working for him during the final original trilogy film.
