For years, formally embraced the Sith despite all of this. A deeper answer has finally been revealed in franchise lore, shedding light on the real reason behind this seemingly odd omission, and the truth is more complex than merely a lack of training.

Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #2 – written by Charles Soule, with art by Luke Ross – reveals that Kylo Ren's struggle with the Force was intentional. Despite his undeniable power, he was never fully in tune with the Dark Side, nor the Light.

However, the real reason Kylo wasn't a Sith was rooted in Palpatine's grand plan. After returning from the brink of death, Palpatine intentionally kept Kylo distanced from the Sith Order to preserve his own intricate schemes. In the end, Kylo found a much more satisfying use of his force abilities.

Kylo Ren Legacy of Variant Cover 2

Kylo Ren's early struggles with the Force are crucial to understanding why he couldn’t become a Sith. While he certainly exhibited immense potential, his connection was fractured as it was torn between both sides of the Force. This internal battle manifested in his Kyber crystal cracking, producing the unique cross-guard lightsaber that became his signature weapon. This physical sign of his inner turmoil further highlighted why the Sith wouldn't have accepted him; he lacked the singular commitment to the dark side required to embrace their code fully.

Are going to read Star Wars' new Kylo Ren series set after The Last Jedi?

Star Wars' new series Legacy of Vader just released its first issue, featuring Kylo Ren in the aftermath of The Last Jedi as he seeks to learn more about his grandfather's past while ruling as the galaxy's new Supreme Leader. Having read the first issue, I'm very excited to see where this series goes next, and how it will flesh out Kylo Ren ahead of the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

Palpatine, ever the manipulator, saw Kylo’s internal conflict and used it to his advantage. Knowing that Kylo’s wavering loyalty to the dark side could jeopardize his plans, Palpatine intentionally excluded him from the Sith Order. By keeping Kylo in the dark about the true nature of the Sith's revival, Palpatine kept him on a path beneficial to his goals. Kylo’s divided connection to Rey, a Force dyad, only further complicated things. Palpatine didn’t need Kylo to be a Sith; he needed him to be a pawn in his long-term strategy.

Kylo Ren Didn't Need To Be A Sith To Make An Impact On Star Wars Lore

Expanding The Franchise's Perspective On Force s

Instead of ing the Sith, Kylo Ren found his own path as the leader of the Knights of Ren. This group of Dark Side warriors operated outside the Sith, with a philosophy centered around power and destruction rather than the strict Sith Code. The Knights were marauders and mercenaries who roamed the galaxy causing chaos. They were imbued with the Force but followed their own rules, focusing on combat and destruction rather than Sith ideology. This gave Kylo Ren an outlet for his immense power, allowing him to rule in a way that was uniquely his own.

Instead of being confined by the limitations of the Sith, Kylo Ren’s leadership of the Knights of Ren gave him the freedom to become a force of destruction in his own right, far beyond the shadow of the Sith in Star Wars lore.

Leading the Knights of Ren allowed Kylo to express his full strength in the Force, but in ways that didn’t require adherence to the rigid structure of the Sith. This also made Kylo a much more dynamic character in the Star Wars universe. Instead of being confined by the limitations of the Sith, Kylo Ren’s leadership of the Knights of Ren gave him the freedom to become a force of destruction in his own right, far beyond the shadow of the Sith in Star Wars lore.

The son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, Ben was manipulated by Palpatine through the Force for most of his life, influenced toward the dark side of the Force. A misstep by Luke Skywalker ultimately left Ben feeling he had no choice but to embrace the dark side, and he became Kylo Ren, a key figure in the First Order. Kylo Ren's heart remained deeply divided, however, even after he ascended to become Supreme Leader of the First Order. He was ultimately redeemed by Rey, with whom he shared a remarkable Force bond, and by the love of his parents.
