To the surprise of all, Streets of Rage 4 was officially announced today. Developed by studios Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games, and to be published by Dotemu, this game will be the fourth installment of Sega's classic beat 'em up video game series.

Streets of Rage 3 was originally released on the Sega Genesis all the way back in 1994, and it was believed that a fourth title would never see the light of day. As an urban legend goes, the "crazy reason" for the lack of a fourth game is due to new management for Sega of America during the Dreamcast era being oblivious to the Streets of Rage series and its success - thus, a sequel was scrapped and never produced. Decades later, the series appears to be in more capable hands.

Publisher Dotemu is already responsible for the revival of cult-classic sports game Windjammers and its recently announced sequel, so Streets of Rage 4 feels like a natural next step for this revival-happy company. The reveal trailer for the game is short, but still shows off a ton of 1990s flair. Featuring a rock soundtrack and a smooth hand-drawn art style, this late sequel certainly looks like a modernized, but still retro action game. Players will be able to experience the game by themselves, or cooperatively with a friend. Take a look:

There is something quite familiar with this method of retro sequels - Sonic Mania.

Looking at the trailer, Streets of Rage 4 seems to be more Mega Man 11 than Sonic the Hedgehog 4, as it appears to replicate the overall feel of the original games while also trying out a newer, bolder, and more modern art style. Additionally, some of the teams involved this project were behind the video game remake Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, which was generally well-received. Unfortunately, no release date or word on which platforms this game would release on were detailed, so fans will have to wait sometime for some new information. In the meanwhile, they can try out the original Streets of Rage games through other means.
