  • A gorgeous epic that becomes a bit too self indulgent at times. Can't believe this movie is so long. Glad Peter Jackson was able to use his Lord of the Rings clout to make this movie. Genuinely thrilling for most of the film. The island is the best part of the movie of course.

  • I had trouble getting through this one just because of the sheer length, but the action keeps it pretty exciting and Kong is an interesting enough character that I thought it was worth watching at least once. You'll especially enjoy it if you've seen and liked the other Kong films.

  • While an incredibly lengthy movie to sit through, Peter Jackson's King Kong is a remarkable retelling of a monster movie classic, faithful to the original premise while also expanding it into an epic. The movie adds plenty of layers to a well-worn tale, and gives us a truly terrifying exploration of Skull Island that veers heavily into horror, making it feel otherworldly. Andy Serkis' Kong is also welcome, as the actor imbues a character who can't speak to humans with so much emotion, making his final moments all the more heartwrenching. While the human cast do feel secondary, Jack Black's Carl Denham is a surprising standut, taking a man many would have associated with comedy, and giving him some truly compelling moments, as he grapples with his showman ego and horrors he was woefully unprepared for.

Synopsis

Peter Jackson's King Kong is a remake of the 1933 film of the same name. When enterprising filmmaker Carl Denham (Jack Black) decides to travel to the mysterious skull island, he hires naive young actress Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) to star in the film he intends to make. Denham's crew of actors discovers the island's big secret: Kong, a 25-foot-tall giant ape. Denham's ambition gets the better of him, and he exploits Darrow's bond with Kong to kidnap him, bringing him back to New York to exploit him for profit.
