Ted Lasso co-creator Brendan Hunt talks about the fate of the series after season 3, which is widely reported to be the acclaimed comedy's final season. The series recently raked in an impressive 20 Emmy nominations for its second season, having taken home the Outstanding Comedy Series award last year. The creators have long said that it would be a three-season series, writing the final episodes with the intention to wrap up the show's various storylines.

The series follows an American football coach who is hired to coach an English soccer team despite knowing nothing about the sport and armed only with his charm and relentless optimism. The series has received widespread acclaim since its debut, becoming a hit with critics and audiences alike, with many praising the performances, writing, and uplifting tone. Despite Ted Lasso season 3 being the planned final one, many fans have hoped for news of a continuation due to its explosion in popularity.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hunt reaffirms that the third season is being written as the end of the story. However, he says that the door remains open to a continuation, though he and the other writers aren't even considering it until after the third season is over. He says that wrapping season 3 and having some time away from the series will give them clearer heads on whether they want to continue the show and in what form. Read his quote below:

We are writing an ending for this three-chunk portion that we’ve always seen, but it’s not like Thanos is in it and half of us die. Most of us, anyway, will probably still be alive, so I don’t think leaving an out is anything to worry about. It’s just a matter of whether or not we pick this up in some other way, and when. But right now, we have to get through this whole mishegas, and then we’ll have a clearer head to see what the future holds.

Hunt's statement reaffirms what the other creators have been saying about the series since its inception. No one expected  to erupt the way it did, becoming the flagship series for Apple TV+ and leading to a jump in subscriber numbers. With that sort of popularity, it wouldn't be surprising if all or at least some of the creative minds behind the series would want to see it live on through a spinoff or spiritual successor.

It's rare for a show as successful as Ted Lasso to pull the plug right as it's hitting its peak, but at the same time, it'll avoid the mistake too many shows make of going on too long after it wears out its welcome. Either way, fans still have season 3 to look forward to as well as some unambiguous closure for the show's storylines. In the end, maybe Ted Lasso in some way or another, but fans will have to wait before they know for sure.
