Fans of Marvel's star-crossed lovers, The Scarlet Witch, will be delighted to learn that the two have their own comic coming out, with the first issue hitting local comic shops on May 21, 2025. From writer Steve Orlando and artist Lorenzo Tammetta, The Vision & the Scarlet Witch reunites the titular couple, but the synopsis teases something is amiss.

The Vision & the Scarlet Witch presents a narrative in which mysterious doors open all over the world, tempting innocent lives with miracles and impossible reunions. Vision's investigation of this anomaly leads to a fatal wound, and Wanda goes to the extreme to save him.

Orlando has been the writer on The Scarlet Witch since 2023, but Wanda Maximoff has had several series since The Scarlet Witch #1 debuted. The 2023 series by Orlando, Sara Pichelli, Cory Petit, Matt Wilson, Stephanie Williams, and others ran for 10 issues and was collected in two trade paperbacks. After this series ended, Scarlet Witch got another series, still part of this run, as is The Vision & the Scarlet Witch.

The Scarlet Witch Series Has Been Rebooted to Issue #1 Multiple Times

Scarlet Witch Reading Order Explained

After The Scarlet Witch (2023) ended, Wanda's next series was Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver, also written by Orlando and with artist Lorenzo Tammetta, who was part of Scarlet Witch's 2023 run. He would continue to be part of her run through Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver for its five-issue run, as well as the next Scarlet Witch series that followed. The following Scarlet Witch series would also start with a new #1 issue, instead of continuing the numerical order from The Scarlet Witch (2023) or Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver.

While Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver, The Scarlet Witch (2024-2025), and The Vision and the Scarlet Witch all restart with Issue #1, they are part of the same run. Even though marketed as new series in single-issue format, when these issues are collected, they are marked as the same run, with Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver Issues #1-5 being Scarlet Witch Vol. 3: Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver, The Scarlet Witch (2024-2025) Issues #1-10 being Scarlet Witch Vol. 4: Queen of Chaos, and Scarlet Witch Vol. 5: Amaranth Rising. Most likely, The Vision and the Scarlet Witch will be Vol. 6.

From Scarlet Witch to She-Hulk, Marvel’s Strategy of Resetting Runs to Attract New Readers

Accessibility Is Key (& Marvel Knows It)

Vision and Scarlet Witch comic cover

The Scarlet Witch is not the only Marvel series in recent years to take the approach of restarting at issue #1. She-Hulk (2022-2023) by Rainbow Rowell, Luca Maresca, Rogê Antônio, Takeshi Miyazawa, Andrés Genolet, Joe Quinones, Dee Cunniffe, Bryan Valenza, Joe Caramagna, and Rico Renzi ran for 15 issues and was collected in three trade paperbacks. Then, She-Hulk, stronger than ever before, started a new series in 2023 called The Sensational She-Hulk, which directly built off the 2022-2023 run and still featured Rowell as the writer, proving that the comic industry has a lot to learn from YA authors.

Like The Scarlet Witch, the 10 issues of The Sensational She-Hulk will be collected as Vol. 4 and Vol. 5 of She-Hulk's 2022-2023 run. In both of these cases, Marvel likely resets these series to Issue #1 to signal to new readers that it’s a starting point. It can be intimidating for newcomers to dive into a series midway through, especially if it has been running for dozens of issues. Meanwhile, when it comes to the trade paperbacks, these series are treated as ongoing.

This is likely the case because, unlike single issues, it is easier to purchase trade paperbacks months—if not years—after they hit shelves, unless they are unavailable at a distributor level. Catching up via trades is easier than with singles, and for those who just follow the trades, it's helpful to know what the next book in the series is. Plus, if The Scarlet Witch or She-Hulk are to get omnibuses, it will be easier to collect them as a continuous run, even when, on a single-issue level, they are treated as several different series.

The Vision & The Scarlet Witch is available on May 21, 2025, from Marvel Comics!
