In a time of CGI, it seems so rare to actually come across practical effects anymore. While there are still a few modern movies that make use of this technique, such as The Lord of the Rings original trilogy using their famous "bigatures" of large (yet still mini) versions of locations, such as Helm's Deep. The movies also used practical effects for many creatures, which came across very well. But do old movies have the same appeal nowadays as they did? I would argue that, for the most part, they really do. While there will always be movies both new and old that have a wide range of quality for practical effects, there tended to be much more care put into puppets and sculptures in the '90s and earlier. The best examples of practical effects that still hold up would be Jaws, Alien, Jurassic Park, and The Thing. Each of these movies used puppetry for their creatures in a way that invokes believable terror. I hope we continue to see the use of practical effects today, as the results can be truly ageless.
