Damon Lindelof, co-creator of <em>The Leftovers</em>, recently acknowledged that season 1 of the show perhaps wasn't as accessible as it could be for viewers. The first season is rather dark and gorey, so I can understand why some find it a challenging watch. He referenced the season 1 episode "Gladys," which is a particular favorite of mine, particularly when Gladys is stoned to death. It's definitely gripping, but yes, a bit too much at times. However, I think it suits the tone of the show well, and there are plenty of other shows that go way darker, in my opinion.
