Some actors are known for playing the same, or similar, type of character in most of their movies. Yet, sometimes, they suddenly branch out into a different genre, and shock their fans with how good they are. Jim Carrey is a good example from his role in The Truman Show or Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. For me, though, the most extreme difference is Bryan Cranston in his role as Walter White in Breaking Bad after years of comedy shows, like Malcolm in the Middle. Not only is the role more serious in general, but Walter steadily grows to be more terrifying and aggressive as the show continues. While there are still moments of humor in the show, these moments become few and far between as Walt's descent into greed, ego, and anger changes who he is as a person. It's amazing how someone so well known for their lighthearted humor can play a role so imposing.
