Warning: contains possible spoilers for recent issues of Thundercats, as well as Thundercats: Apex!

The “lost” Thundercats are getting their own series that promises to expand the franchise further. Earlier this year, Dynamite Entertainment revived the Thundercats to critical and fan acclaim. The publisher has promised even bigger and better things for the book’s second year, and today the publisher announced the next title in the line: Thundercats: Lost, which shines the spotlight on some of the franchise’s more obscure characters.

Ed Brisson will also write Dynamite's revival of the Silverhawks.

Dynamite Entertainment announced Thundercats: Lost today, and the book will be the next entry in a line consisting of the mainline Thundercats book as well as the soon to launch Silverhawks. Thundercats: Lost will be written by Ed Brisson, who penned the recent, game-changing Apex one-shot. Thundercats: Lost reunites Brisson with Rapha Lobosco, who drew Apex. Dynamite’s synopsis for the book reads as follows:

After being shot down in the middle of a war zone, five Thunderian warriors find themselves lost, on the run, and fighting for their lives. Trapped behind enemy lines and being hunted by a powerful enemy, the ThunderCats: Lost team invites fans into a wholly new outlook on the franchise, and an essential addition to the flagship title ThunderCats and sister series SilverHawks.

Thundercats: Lost returns Bengali, Pumyra and Lynx-O to the current continuity, and will introduce two new ‘Cats as well. The book will ship with a variety of variant covers, including one by Mark Bagley.

Dynamite’s Thundercats title was one of 2024’s biggest success stories. The book’s first issue sold over 100,000 copies prior to its release, and each month writer Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss have justified the hype. Shalvey, Moss and their collaborators have breathed new life into the Thundercats, making it the best reboot of the franchise to date. Thundercats’ first year was a slow burn, as Shalvey and Moss gradually reintroduced classic characters and vehicles, such as Snarf and the Thundertank. Moss and Shalvey modernize these concepts, and in Snarf’s case, hint he is much more than fans thought.

Bengali, Lynx-O and Pumyra debuted in the animated movie Thundercats Ho!

The team of Thundercats: Lost are some of the later additions to the mythos, added in later seasons of the original cartoon. Since Lynx-O and company were not part of the initial wave of Thundercats, which included Tygra and Cheetara, they are not as well known. Only hardcore Thundercats fans will their existence. Thundercats: Lost looks to change that, elevating these characters up further, and showing they can be as compelling as LIon-O or Tygra. Keeping with the spirit of expansion that is a hallmark of Dynamite’s line, Brisson and Lobosco have created new Thundercats too.

Lion-O, the leader of the Thundercats, is a great and noble warrior, but now, in the wake of a great tragedy, he is heading down a dark, twisted path.

While the main Thundercats team has their hands full with Mumm-Ra and the Mu’Tants on Third Earth, the Thundercats Lost squad will be in a much different place. Speaking of this new world in Thundercats lore, Brisson had this to say:

The world that the ThunderCats: Lost team have ventured into is very different from where our mainline ThunderCats are, and the trials and tribulations that they face as a result are unique to this series — though just as exciting and deadly. They find themselves trapped in a highly militarized zone, in a world that eschews magic in favor of hyper-advanced technology. This world is ruled with an iron fist, under a cruel dictator with an innate hatred of cats — so much so that they're hellbent on stamping out this cat invasion before it can take root. The villains they face will be familiar to ThunderCats fans, but you'll have to read to find out just who they're up against.

Brisson did not elaborate further on the antagonist’s identity. While Mumm-Ra and the Mu’Tants were the team’s primary foes, the franchise featured a number of other villains as well–any of which could be behind Thundercats: Lost. Dynamite’s Thundercats line has, in addition to its new characters, rejuvenated classic villains, such as Mole Master in Thundercats: Apex.

Thundercats: Lost Will Have a Vastly Different Tone

And with this new environment comes a new tone, one vastly different from the mainline Thundercats book. Brisson stated the team was on a “secret mission,” and strongly hinted that not all of them would make it out alive. While the stakes for the main Thundercats book are high, they will be even higher for Thundercats: Lost. Given that the book’s protagonists are not as well known, it raises the odds that one of them could be killed during the mission. This dark and gritty tone, while a far cry from what fans expect, is the perfect addition to the franchise.
