Jenna Ortega, star of the hit Netflix original, Wednesday, recently revealed that she did not like the love triangle her character, Wednesday Addams, was involved in during Wednesday season 1. The show has been an incredible success for Netflix, in large part because of Ortega's gripping portrayal of Wednesday.
In Wednesday season 1, Ortega's Wednesday Addams floats between two love interests, Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White) and Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan). She ends up spurning both of them after suspecting them each in turn of being the monster she spends Wednesday season 1 looking for. Fans have been split over which of the two they prefer as a love interest for Wednesday, but Ortega recently confessed to changing certain Wednesday lines, revealing in the process that her love triangle with Tyler and Xavier was not to her liking either.
Jenna Ortega Thought Wednesday's Love Triangle Didn't Fit The Character
Ortega believes that the love triangle situation simply does not fit her character. Wednesday Addams is an enigma of sardonic individualism, and it doesn't seem like the typical teen romance would appeal to her, which is likely what Ortega is getting at. Ortega's version of Wednesday has become so beloved because of the level of care things like this demonstrate. If she has reached that conclusion, it shows she has clearly thought deeply about her character and considered how she can improve her.
Ortega's love for her Wednesday character may have also driven her to believe that Wednesday deserves someone better than, or at least different from, Tyler or Xavier. Neither of them has the knack for mischief or dark outlook on the world that are such important parts of Wednesday Addam's character. Ortega may feel that Wednesday belongs with someone on a wavelength more similar to her own. Or she may just feel that Wednesday is too mature to end up in a teenage love triangle like the one the show tried to create.
Why Jenna Ortega Is Right About Wednesday's Love Triangle
Whether it is the concept of the love triangle or the people in it that puts Ortega off, she is right. Wednesday may have a love interest problem going forward because it does not seem like either Tyler or Xavier is right for Wednesday Addams. The love triangle itself is problematic because Wednesday is far too mature to be caught up in such a thing. The real problem, however, is that neither of the characters seems to remotely work as a love interest to Wednesday.
Wednesday should have a love interest who is more like the rest of her family. It should be someone who loves the darker side of life and is proudly individualistic like Wednesday herself. Another alternative would be to dump the love interests entirely in Wednesday season 2. Wednesday is someone who seems unlikely to meet her match in her local school, even if it is Nevermore Academy. This part of Wednesday's life could easily be told without the presence of another unconvincing romance.
