Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Ultimate Wolverine #6!

The Marvel Universe is bursting at the seams with powerful mutants, but the Wolverine encounters Legion, Charles Xavier’s omega-level son. The Maker’s new Ultimate Universe has given numerous X-Men icons some truly horrifying transformations, and David Haller is no exception as Marvel hints that this variant of Legion is far more eerie than his Earth-616 counterpart.

Legion appears to be the sole surviving high-level telepath left of the Ultimate Universe’s X-Men, a.k.a. the Opposition.

In Ultimate Wolverine #6, written by Chris Condon, with art by Alex Lin, Wolverine finds himself trapped within the confines of what appears to be someone's mind, to which they say to Logan, “We were many, we were Legion, but now we are One.”

This disclosure of a powerful telepath who holds multiple personalities and refers to themself as Legion screams David Haller’s oncoming debut into Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. With X-Men heroes like Jean Grey and Professor X meeting their tragic ends, Legion may very well be the Ultimate Universe’s last omega-level telepath, making him all the more consequential.

Legion’s incredible mutant powers as an omega-level reality-warper and psychic make him one of the greatest powerhouses the X-Men have to offer, but his history with mental illness has also caused him to be somewhat unpredictable. While this Ultimate variant of Legion remains an enigma, David Haller appears to be much more self-actualized and has already demonstrated control over his powers. Dissecting what Legion says to Logan, it is possible that David may have also been previously controlled by the Eurasian government, similar to Wolverine. This mysterious metaphysical prison is likely Legion's attempt to break Logan free from his brainwashing.

With Jean Grey existing as a human battery for the Eurasian Weapons X Program and the only remains of Charles Xavier being his brain, Legion appears to be the sole surviving high-level telepath left of the Ultimate Universe’s X-Men, a.k.a. the Opposition. There is the terrifying possibility that Legion is under the control of Colossus, Magik, and Omega Red; however, it’s more likely that Legion is fighting alongside Gambit and Kitty Pryde to free mutant-kind. What is shown of Ultimate Legion is brief, but it’s a clear stark contrast to the Legion from the main Marvel timeline.

Despite Legion initially being introduced as a troubled and unpredictable mutant in New Mutants #25, he has since grown into an endearing hero who often fights alongside the X-Men, notably helping Nightcrawler defeat Onslaught during the Krakoa Era. However, Charles Xavier has never had the best relationship with his son,#9, when he psychically attacks him, revealing that he still does not fully trust his son. This, of course, isn’t a problem within the Ultimate Universe as Professor X is out of the picture, allowing Legion to play a more prominent role as an X-Men.

In Ultimate Marvel fashion, this version of Legion is far more macabre than his Earth-616 counterpart, with Legion waxing poetics at a confused Wolverine and confining him to a dark, snowy prison within his mind. The design of Ultimate Legion has yet to be unveiled. Still, it can be inferred that he will finally get to play a bigger part as a hero within the X-Men, as his telepathic abilities are undoubtedly a rare and essential asset for the mutant resistance. Moreover, Legion may be the only free mutant left who can break Wolverine free from his Winter Soldier mind control.

The bright side to the unfortunate loss of Jean Grey and Charles Xavier within the Ultimate Universe is that other heroes, most notably Legion, get to have a turn in the spotlight. With Logan beginning to his past just as Legion enters the fray, Marvel may very likely be setting up Legion as the hero who will finally break Wolverine free from his Winter Soldier brainwashing. In one sentence, Marvel hints that it’s only a matter of time before Legion makes his entrance into Marvel’s Ultimate Universe and exists as the X-Men hero he was always destined to be.
