The brand new quick resume feature for the Xbox Series X's best feature may have been one that was fairly easy to overlook.

The new quick resume feature is as literal as it sounds. With the Xbox Series X, players will be able to quickly resume a game at the exact point they stopped playing at without needing to go through the process of starting the game up and loading into their save file. It's effectively treating games like tabs in a web browser, where players can freely switch between up to six active games at any point in time. It's a feature that sounded cool when it was announced but it wasn't really understood how practical it would be.

The ability to stopped playing Assassin's Creed Valhalla later on, without ever having to see a single loading screen. Think about how many times people just decide to not play a game because they don't want to sit through the process of switching games. Quick resume brings a completely new level of convenience that will be absolutely add up over the lifespan of the console.

Xbox Quick Resume Has Game-Changing Potential

Xbox Series X - UI Update

A sudden loss of power has plagued video games forever. It's incredibly frustrating to be in the middle of a long sequence in a game with little to no checkpoints and then have a cord pulled out of the wall or a power surge that reverts any progress back to zero, forcing players to completely start over. With quick resume, that issue could be a thing of the past, because the feature remains active even when the Xbox Series X powers down. Players can shut their console down without actually closing the game and pick up right where they left off the next time they turn the console on. So even though power issues erasing progress weren't exactly common, they should theoretically be non-existent from now on.

As with anything, the true potential of quick resume will be seen once the console has officially been released to the masses. People will be trying all sorts of things that haven't been thought of or talked about yet and the feature's strengths will be identified fairly quickly. If quick resume reaches its potential and becomes an identifying feature of the Xbox Series X, there's little doubt that it will become a staple of convenience for game consoles moving forward.
