During his recent tenure on Marvel’s flagship title, The Amazing Spider-Man, writer Zeb Wells has been responsible for a massive overhaul on the title, but, according to the prolific comics and television writer, the most dramatic change is yet to come. Speaking in an interview concerning his philosophy and intended direction for the title, Wells opined that his plans might prove controversial with the fandom. And coming off his current run, that is saying something.

Wells received the title of Amazing Spider-Man, complete with a relaunch, in 2022 following the exit of longtime scribe Nick Spencer at the end of his critically-panned run in 2021. Between Spencer and Wells' runs was a brief period where the title was governed by a conclave of writers in a brief, if not indelibly from Spencer’s overstuffed run, while also endorsing a more street-level mentality with more stream-of-consciousness style action. While seemingly permanently separating Peter from his former love interest Mary Jane and leaving his closest ally as a genuinely concerned Norman Osborne might seem shocking for longtime fans of the character, Wells made a point to tell ThePopVerse that he believed the comic-buying public “will be upset” by what he plans to reveal in May for issue #26, which will be drawn by John Romita Jr.

Spider-Man’s Troubles Are Only Beginning

In a wide-ranging interview with the classic death of Gwen Stacy in 1973 in of their ultimate impact on the character. In the midst of being separated from his loved ones, betrayed by his allies, and being forced to accept his limitations in more and more humbling ways, Peter Parker's emotional journey as a superhero has always been the heart of the title. And as Wells seems to hint, it's likely about to get rocked again. He related:

I can tease that many people will be very mad at me. I can tease that Nick (Lowe) told me not to do any comic conventions after this issue comes out (laughs). People will be upset.

Wells Dares To Make a Bad Situation Even Worse

It would be quite difficult to imagine a worse situation for Spider-Man than the one he currently faces in the pages of his own title. He is currently devising a solution to save the now estranged Mary Jane, marooned in an alternate dimension, while being forced on the run from the authorities and alienated from the usual roster of heroes he might call for aid. While Peter Parker’s life has never been what a layman might call easy, Wells’ run has seen Parker laid out in hospital for months, sent to literal Hell for an extended period, and taking beat-downs from his usual rogues’ gallery. Whatever is coming in issue #26 would have to be a tragedy on top of all of that and the emotional stresses he’s been getting clobbered with.

In any the case, writer Zeb Wells is promising a showstopper to end all showstoppers in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #26. What it could be is anyone’s guess.
