Marvel’s X-Men are some of the greatest powerhouses in comics. From adamantium claws to optic blasts, most of the gifts granted to Marvel's Mutants make them some of their universe's most formidable fighters. But not every mutant gift is offensive in nature.

Whether it's the ability to create shields, depower others, or simply strengthen oneself or one's teammates, these X-Men have defensive capabilities that deserve the utmost respect.

15 Jonas Graymalkin: Darkness Empowerment

Created by Marc Guggenheim & Yannick Paquette

Graymalkin as he appeared in Young X-Men

Graymalkin may be one of the more obscure X-Men in this list, but his considerable power cannot be denied. Born in pre-revolutionary America, the young X-Man spent two centuries buried alive in the woods near the Xavier Institute after an attempted murder by his bigoted father.

Surviving only through his mutant gift – the darker it is, the stronger and more durable he becomes – Graymalkin has the potential to be one of the X-Men’s sturdiest solders, but only in the dark. With an equally increased longevity and incredible self-sustenance, Jonas is particularly hard to harm when enveloped in shadow. But when in the light, he’s as weak as anybody else.

14 Skids/Sally Blevins: Frictionless Forcefield

Created by Louise Simonson & Jackson Guice

Marvel Comics Skids

While Sally Blevins hasn’t had the most noteworthy career with Marvel’s Merry Mutants, her mutant power means she rarely needs anyone watching her back. Gifted with a personal force field, Skids is near-totally protected from any attack.

Thanks to the frictionless nature of her mutant power, this shield makes it impossible for anyone to hold onto her while also dispersing any kinetic energy that comes her way – be it energy blasts, bullets, or even a tumble off the curb. And with the ability to extend this field to also protect anyone in her immediate vicinity, Skids can usually skate her allies out of any trouble.

13 Lucas Bishop: Energy Absorption

Created by Jphn Byrne & Whilce Portacio

Bishop Portal X-Men

Lucas Bishop’s incredible energy-based abilities are most often portrayed offensively, but there’s a lot to be said for their defensive capacity within his chosen career as a superhero. Able to absorb most forms of energy, Bishop is resistant to traditional supervillain energy rays or concussive blasts, and even different forms of psionic or magical attacks to boot.

At his peak, Bishop even managed to metabolize a psychic blast from the X-Men villain called Onslaught. And so long as he’s absorbed enough energy, Lucas even has a certain degree of superhuman speed, stamina, and self-sustenance – meaning anyone hoping to outlast Bishop may as well say their prayers.

12 Emma Frost: Organic Diamond Form

Created by Chris Claremont & John Byrne

Emma Frost using her diamond ability in Marvel Comics

The White Queen of the Hellfire Club is one of Marvel Comics’ most accomplished psychics, but it’s her dazzling secondary mutation – an organic diamond form – that ranks among the X-Men’s most effective defensive abilities. Once her form is shifted, Emma’s durability is extended to superhuman levels to the point that she’s even withstood Celestial blasts and direct blows from the Hulk himself.

With an additional increase in strength, a resistance to extreme temperatures, and the ability to survive without food or water, the White Queen’s diamond form more than makes up for the limitations it puts on her telepathy. And it proves that Emma Frost has always been fabulous under pressure.

11 Cecilia Reyes: Psioplasmic Bio-Field

Created by Scott Lobdell & Carlos Pacheco

Cecilia Reyes uses her powers in X-Men comics.

A mutant whose gift provides her with a psioplasmic force field that constantly surrounds her body, Cecilia Reyes has always been concerned with protecting others more than she protects herself. Always extending six inches from her body, this bio-generated field is usually completely invisible, only appearing in a translucent state when activated.

The X-Men have always been one of Marvel's most popular teams, but longtime readers know they also feature Marvel's most dangerous fighters.

One of the X-Men least interested in offensive tactics, her power is genuinely defensive in nature, subconsciously protecting her from any harm even when she’s unaware of the threat. As an extension of her body, Dr. Reyes does occasionally feel the effects of a strong enough attack as it disperses over her field, but its strengths outweigh its weaknesses.

10 Cannonball/Samuel Guthrie: Thermo-Chemical Energy Field

Created by Chris Claremont & Bob McLeod

Marvel Comics Cannonball Art

This former New Mutant has, by far, one of the most explosive abilities among the X-Men’s roster, with the gift to generate thermo-chemical energy field that propels him to any destination. But Guthrie’s real boon is his built-in blast shield that defends him from practically any obstacle – a shield that he’s even capable of extending this blast-field to others to protect them.

Often said to be “nigh-invulnerable while blastin’,” Sam Guthrie personal shield has even managed to stand up against the likes of Gladiator from the Imperial Guard, making him one of Marvel’s most durable mutants so long as he’s activating his powers.

9 Armor/Hisako Ichiki: Psionic Exoskeleton Armor

Created by Joss Whedon & John Cassaday

Hisako Armor Screaming X-Men

Though not a psychic in the traditional sense, Hisako Ichiki’s psionic exoskeleton is truly mind-blowing. Aptly living up to her code name, Armor, this shield drastically increases her strength and durability, allowing her to face off against titans like Fin Fang Foom while also demonstrating the ability to at least partially shape the armor itself.

Standing up to anything just shy of Adamantium, Hisako does have a slight vulnerability towards laser-based attacks as her armor is translucent enough for her to see through. But anyone with a power that lets them survive falling from the Earth’s atmosphere deserves to be called Armor.

8 Colossus/Piotr Rasputin: Organic Steel Form

Created by Len Wein & Dave Cockrum

x-men's colossus looking bereft

Traditionally considered to be the classic tank of the X-Men, Piotr Rasputin’s organic steel skin is as iconic as it is durable. Greatly increasing his strength and stamina, Colossus’ metallic shell makes him one of the team’s most stalwart defenders, allowing him to withstand blows from heavy hitters like Juggernaut or the Hulk, and live to tell the tale.

While the upper limits for how long he can stay in this metallic form have yet to be explored, Piotr doesn’t even need to eat, drink, or breathe while transformed. And considering his initial interpretation as something of a gentle giant, it’s no wonder that Colossus' abilities are so inherently defensive.

7 Magneto/Max Eisenhardt: Magnetic Field Manipulation

Created by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby

X-Men #1 1991 cover with Cyclops and Wolverine fighting Magneto

Though Max’s powers are often simplified as a general control over metal, it’s actually his manipulation of magnetic fields that gives him one of the strongest defensive abilities in the Marvel Universe. Able to generate a magnetic force field around himself and his allies, Magneto’s fields have withstood attacks from Thor and his hammer Mjolnir, as well as combined strikes from Thor and She-Hulk.

Erik’s shields are strong enough that he withstood the detonation of a nuclear warhead at ground zero and even the fire of the Phoenix itself. Magneto is classified as an Omega-level mutant for a reason, and his defensive powers are a major part of that.

6 Juggernaut/Cain Marko: Demonic Empowerment

Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, & Alex Toth

Comic book art: The Juggernaut with Cyttorak and Cyttorak's scion behind him.

While empowered by the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, Cain Marko is considered one of the strongest characters in the Marvel Universe, but it’s his stamina and durability that make him so potent a powerhouse. Regularly trading blows with the likes of Spider-Man, Thor, and the Hulk, there’s very little out there – man-made or magical – that can cause Cain any substantive damage.

On top of the already incredible invulnerability instilled in him by the Crimson Bands, Charles Xaviers’ stepbrother can also mystically generate a personal force field to reinforce his durability even further. Meaning that, at his peak, this Juggernaut truly is unstoppable.
