In what might be Black Clover's final arc, Yuno finally made a stunning ission that changes the entire dynamic of his relationship with Asta, saying that Asta's death finally makes it possible for Yuno to sur him and become the Wizard King. Asta has always seen Yuno as superior, so the reveal that Yuno has the opposite perspective is a startling revelation.

So far, Black Clover has depicted Asta as struggling to sur Yuno, but it turns out that was only one side of the story. The other half is hard-won, only being exposed after Asta's apparent death. After the villain Lucius Zogratis manipulated her soul, Sister Lily seemingly killed Asta, whose goal has long been to become the most powerful mage in the Clover Kingdom.

When Yuno hears the news that Asta is dead in chapter #336 of Black Clover by mangaka Yūki Tabata, the child prodigy and prince says that he always considered Asta to be the one ahead of him. He then continues, saying that if Asta is indeed dead, then he will finally sur him, take out Lucius Zogratis and become the Wizard King.

From the very beginning of Black Clover's underrated story, Yuno has always appeared to be a great many steps ahead of Asta. During the Grimoire Acceptance Ceremony in Hage village, not only did Asta fail to receive a grimoire, but Yuno received the coveted four-leaf clover, even becoming the owner of a second grimoire hundreds of chapters later. In addition to Yuno having the ability to wield the rare Spirit Magic, a spirit chose him as her host, which is considered divine protection and proof of strength.

The two heroes of Black Clover have consistently been earning higher levels of power, respect, and rank. However, there are many times in which Yuno has ascended to high positions of rank much quicker than Asta. In fact, when Asta was recently awarded the title of Senior Magic Knight, First Class, this impressive accomplishment was overshadowed by the fact that Yuno had already become Grand Magic Knight, a rank second only to the highest rank of Wizard King. Still, according to Yuno, Asta deserves a higher position than himself.

Even though Asta had already won an impressive number of fights against incredibly powerful opponents, Black Clover offered only a few hints at how much of an influence Asta had on Yuno's life as a mage. Even when the two have teamed up against seemingly invincible threats, the playful banter between the two young Knights speaks volumes about the levels of respect each holds for the other. However, when Yuno was pushed to his limits and almost lost his own life, it became even more clear how much his bond with Asta had motivated him.

In Yuno's battle against Dark Triad member Zenon in chapter #308, the only thing that gets Yuno back to his feet is the promise he made to Asta. And he's not alone, with almost every Magic Knight that Asta has interacted with finding something about the character that resonates with them and inspires them to improve. Yuno also experienced shock during his later battle with Lucifero upon learning how insignificant he was compared to the King of Devils. His iration for Asta and his powers increased further when it turned out they were the only thing that could defeat the Supreme Devil.

Now That Asta's Back, Can Yuno Still Sur Him?

Black Clover quickly revealed that Asta wasn't actually dead but was instead teleported to a faraway place the series had not explored. Still, the reveal of Yuno's perspective is a significant twist that sheds light on his goals going forward. Author Yūki Tabata has added another fascinating layer to the two's fantastic shōnen rivalry by sharing the true feelings of Yuno. The secondary protagonist is often a man with few words, so when he does speak, they are often words that have a great impact—another contrast to Asta's loud and brash personality.

While several arcs have included Asta, Yuno, and their Magic Knight Squads tackling the same dangerous mission together, both characters have found their own methods of increasing their strengths. Asta has learned to control Ki and maximize his anti-magic powers by forming a legitimate bond with the ostracized Devil living in his five-clover grimoire, Liebe. At the same time, several secrets regarding Yuno's parentage and past life have bestowed vast magical powerups to the fellow orphan in almost every arc.

Even though Yuno has worked hard to increase his talents, Asta's work ethic and determination have convinced the Grand Magic Knight that he is inferior. This is a refreshing twist for a character like Yuno, who is often portrayed as an arrogant rival who is naturally gifted at everything they attempt. Now that Asta has increased his powers yet again in the foreign land he was sent to, Yuno's idea that he can't become Wizard King while Asta is still alive may ring true.

Readers will never be able to look at Yuno and his relationship with Asta the same way again. Now that audiences have even more context on the dynamic duo's bond, their reunion during the monumental battle against Lucius Zogratis becomes even more satisfying in what is likely one of the final confrontations in Black Clover's story.
